Walk out of the dunes at Upton Towans and three miles of golden sand open up in front of you, running from the mouth of the Hayle Estuary to the white lighthouse on Godrevy Island. Surfers bob beyond the breakers, and at low water the beach is so wide that even August feels roomy. That’s the morning view from the parks on this side of St Ives Bay, and it’s why so many families pick Hayle over its busier neighbour across the water.

Searching for lodges in Hayle Cornwall turns up plenty of single parks selling their own stays, but very little that compares them. So that’s what this guide does. It covers seven parks and self catering lodges around Hayle, all from our own listings, with who each one suits, the beach rules for pets and the best months to come.

Three parks sit within a couple of miles of the town: one on the towans, one by the water at Lelant and one in old manor grounds on the edge of town. The rest are a short hop inland or round to Carbis Bay, so you’re choosing between waking up by the sand and waking up somewhere quieter with the sea ten minutes away.

Carbis Bay beach is under five minutes away. To stay on that side of the water, our guide to lodges near Carbis Bay has more.
The area splits into three kinds of stay.
The dunes run from Riviere past Upton to Gwithian. You’ll walk to the beach every morning, but it’s breezy in winter.
The Lelant side is sheltered and wooded, and the railway runs right past, so you can leave the car behind for the day.
Gwinear, Connor Downs and Praze-an-Beeble give you quieter lanes, more space and more on-park facilities, all within about 15 mins of the coast.
Whichever you pick, it’s handy for St Ives. Parking there is tight all summer, and the views are better from the carriage anyway.
Yes, and it’s one of the best reasons to stay on this side of the bay. The sand nearest the town stays open to pets all year, while the St Ives beaches shut to them from mid-May to the end of September. These rules come from Cornwall Council.
| Beach | Pets allowed? | Restricted dates and times |
|---|---|---|
| Hayle Towans (harbour end) and Mexico Towans | Yes, all year | No restriction |
| Harvey’s Towans to Godrevy Point (Upton Towans and Gwithian) | Seasonal | 1 July to 31 August, 10am to 6pm |
| Porthkidney Sands, Lelant | Yes, all year | No restriction |
| Carbis Bay | Seasonal | 15 May to 30 September, 10am to 6pm |
| Porthminster and Porthmeor, St Ives | Seasonal | 15 May to 30 September, 10am to 6pm |
| Hayle Estuary, Carnsew Pool and Copperhouse Pool | No | Banned all year, 24 hours a day |
The estuary ban protects the wildlife, so keep to the roads and paths round it. Breaking the rules can mean a £100 fine.
Hayle sits in the middle of West Cornwall, so the best attractions are close. These are the things to do nearest your lodge.
Set off at low water and follow the sand north as kitesurfers skim the shallows. It’s about three miles to the point. Out on its island, the lighthouse is said to have inspired Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse.
Look down from the cliffs at Mutton Cove and you’ll often see grey seals hauled out on the rocks below. It’s the biggest seal colony in Cornwall, and winter’s the best time to spot them. The cafe by the car park makes a good stop on the way back.
Calling all little explorers! This award-winning wildlife sanctuary, one of the top family attractions in Cornwall, is home to more than 1,200 birds from about 130 species, from Humboldt penguins and flamingos to macaws and eagles, plus red pandas, otters and tiny harvest mice. Kids love the free-flying bird shows and the JungleBarn indoor play centre. It’s open all year from 10am, with free parking.
In winter, thousands of waders feed on the mud here: curlews, little egrets, oystercatchers, teals and wigeons. The level King George V Memorial Walk round Copperhouse Pool is an easy stroll with a pram.
Hayle built the steam engines that pumped Cornwall’s mines. Harvey’s Foundry ran from 1779 to 1903, the town is part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and the Hayle Heritage Centre on Foundry Square tells the story.
Book a lesson with a local surf school on the towans, where the long, gently shelving beach suits beginners, then grab a warm Philps pasty, made in Hayle since 1958, and eat it on the harbour wall.
Skip the summer traffic. The St Ives Bay Line runs 4.25 miles from St Erth, hugging the estuary and the cliffs above Carbis Bay, with around 28 services each way on weekdays. From the station you can explore Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum on foot.
Just above the estuary, this hill was a Neolithic enclosure before it became an Iron Age hillfort. The climb takes minutes, and from the top you can see both coasts at once.
For longer day trips, Marazion and St Michael’s Mount are about 20 mins away, and Falmouth and the Lizard are under an hour. The cliffs around Cape Cornwall and the turquoise water at Pedn Vounder beach are worth the trip too.
The weather on St Ives Bay changes fast, so pack for wind as well as sun.
Yes. St Ives is about 16 mins away by car, but the easiest way in is the train from St Erth. Hayle usually gives you more space and more peaceful parks.
Yes. Six of the seven places in this guide have hot tubs. You can also search all our lodges with hot tubs.
All seven welcome pets, but it varies by lodge, so check before you book. The Dunes at Upton Towans takes up to two.
RNLI lifeguards patrol Hayle Towans daily from early May to late September, plus Easter and October half term. Swim between the red and yellow flags.
About 20 mins by car. Hayle also has its own station on the main line to Penzance, Cornwall’s last big town before Land’s End.
Three miles of sand, seals off the point and a hot tub at the end of the day. To look further afield, our guide to lodges in Cornwall covers every holiday park and chalet in the county, and the Newquay lodges guide is handy for the north coast. When you’re ready, pick a park from the Hayle listings above or find a holiday lodge anywhere in the UK.
