Visitor's guide

East Anglia Visitor's Guide

Lodges in East Anglia sit among the pines and heather of the Brecks near Thetford Forest

Picture a summer evening on your deck, with the hot tub warming up, Scots pines going gold in the last of the sun and nothing louder than a woodpecker. Tomorrow there's a choice to make. You could take a day boat through the reed beds of the Broads, walk the sand at Holkham or watch seals off Blakeney Point. East Anglia is flat, dry and full of sky, and it's closer than people think.

This guide rounds up six holiday lodges East Anglia guests rate at 4.6 or higher, from a forest retreat on the River Thet to a Victorian hall with an indoor pool.

You'll also find the beach dog rules, seal pup dates and 2026 festivals, plus a month by month planner.

Why book lodges in East Anglia for your next break?

The driest corner of England

It's the driest part of the UK, for a start. Many areas get less than 600mm of rain a year, roughly two thirds of the national average, so your walks and beach days have a better chance than most.

Space, nature and a hot tub

Then there's the space. This corner of the East of England covers Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, and it packs in a national park, the UK's largest manmade lowland forest, nature reserves full of wildlife and more than 80 miles of coast path. Holiday lodges and log cabins suit it far better than hotel rooms. You get a kitchen for picnics, somewhere to rinse sandy wellies and, at every park on this page, a hot tub on the deck.

Most of these parks are small and peaceful, set in open countryside, so you get a home from home with beautiful views rather than a busy holiday park full of activities.

Broads, coast or forest: picking your base

Our parks mostly sit in the quiet countryside between Norwich, Thetford and the Suffolk border, within an hour of many of the top local attractions.

Thetford Forest and the Brecks

Thetford Forest covers 18,730 hectares of pines, heathland and broadleaves. High Lodge is the main visitor centre, with activities including Go Ape, cycle trails and play areas. The forest is open every day from dawn until dusk and dogs are welcome throughout. Check Forestry England's Thetford Forest page before you go, as most car parks now charge.

The Norfolk Broads

Around 125 miles of lock free rivers and lakes wind through this national park, and you don't need any experience to hire a day boat at Wroxham or Potter Heigham. Head south along the Yare and Waveney to discover quieter water.

The North Norfolk coast

Holkham, Wells, Blakeney and the seaside town of Cromer line up along the top of the county, all inside a National Landscape protected for its natural beauty, and seal trips sail from Morston and Blakeney, where the National Trust has looked after the reserve on Blakeney Point for more than 110 years. Our guide to lodges near Blakeney covers this coast in more detail.

The Suffolk coast and market towns

Southwold is the classic seaside town, Aldeburgh has its fish and chips and its June festival, and at Sutton Hoo you can learn about the Anglo-Saxon ship burial. Inland are the timber framed streets of Lavenham and the abbey ruins at Bury St Edmunds. See lodges near Aldeburgh for the coast, or lodges near Bury St Edmunds if you'd rather be inland.

An East Anglia family holiday: days out with the kids

Children get a great deal out of a week here. The beaches are wide and shallow, the forest is built for bikes and dens, and you're rarely more than an hour from a big family day out.

BeWILDerwood, Hoveton

Just over the river from Wroxham, this woodland adventure park of treehouses, rope bridges and slides is the place most children ask for. In 2026 it opened for Easter on 28 March, and the summer BeWILDerfest runs from 18 July to 1 September.

Go Ape and the trails at High Lodge

Older children can take on the Go Ape tree top course while the little ones head for the play areas, and the bike trails start from the car park.

Seal trips from Morston and Blakeney

Then there are the seals.

Boat trips give you a good look at the colony on Blakeney Point without disturbing it. Harbour seals have their pups from June to August, and grey seals from November to January. Grey seals only started breeding there regularly in 2001, and now they may well outnumber the harbour seals along this coast!

Golf, fishing and lake days

Fishing lakes

Three places make a great base for a lake holiday:

  • Yaxham Waters: three well stocked lakes just for guests
  • Weybread Lakes: luxury lakeside fishing on site
  • Langmere Lakes Lodges: five lakes over seven acres, free with a rod licence

Golf close to home

Golfers are well looked after too. Hawthorn Glen Lodges near Downham Market sits on Denver Golf Club, with the lodges looking out over the course, and you can play all year.

Couples breaks in East Anglia

Weybread Lakes is the obvious pick for two, but Oak Farm, with just three lodges, is almost as peaceful.

A day on the Suffolk coast

  • Walk the shingle at Aldeburgh
  • Catch a concert at Snape during the Aldeburgh Festival (12 to 28 June 2026)
  • Drive up to Southwold, where the pier reaches 190 metres into the North Sea

Back at your retreat, it's just you, the hot tub and a very big sky.

Bringing the dog to the beaches

Dogs are welcome on most beaches, though the rules change with the seasons. Most of the holiday lodges East Anglia has on our site welcome pets, and you can filter for dog friendly lodges to see them all.

  • Holkham: dogs on leads in the most vulnerable areas from 1 April to 31 August while terns, oystercatchers and ringed plovers nest. More than 70% of the beach stays open for off lead walks.
  • Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Sea Palling: seasonal restrictions from 1 May to 30 September, according to Visit North Norfolk.
  • Old Hunstanton, Thornham and Waxham Sands: dog friendly all year.
  • Horsey: in the seal pupping season, November to January, dogs stay on leads and everyone stays off the beach.
  • Sutton Hoo: dogs are welcome on all the estate walks, on a short lead.

The best time for East Anglia holidays

Early summer breaks in East Anglia

Early summer is our favourite. In May and June the days are long, the coast is quiet before the school holidays and the best festivals land one after another:

  • Norfolk & Norwich Festival: 8 to 24 May 2026
  • Royal Norfolk Show, Norwich: 24 and 25 June 2026
  • Aldeburgh Festival: 12 to 28 June 2026
  • Latitude Festival, Henham Park: 23 to 26 July 2026

Autumn and winter

Late autumn and winter bring seal pups, empty beaches and hot tub evenings under a dark sky.

Cold and quiet, a great time to explore the forest trails across the region. The last grey seal pups are at Horsey, so it's a perfect month for a hot tub retreat.
Short days and frosty mornings make it ideal hot tub weather. Visit the coastal nature reserves for a day of winter wildlife and beautiful frosty views.
Lighter evenings and quiet coast paths. The new season starts at many local attractions, including BeWILDerwood, which opened on 28 March in 2026.
Day boats are out on the Broads and the coastal path dries out, so it's a good time to explore. Holkham's dog lead zones start on 1 April.
Long days, the Norfolk & Norwich Festival and quiet seaside towns before the summer rush. A great time for early summer holidays in East Anglia with the family.
The Aldeburgh Festival and the Royal Norfolk Show, plus harbour seal pups at Blakeney Point. Long, light evenings to enjoy the lake views from your luxury deck.
Warm and dry, with Latitude at Henham Park. Many seaside beaches across East Anglia get busy once the schools break up, so make an early start to your day.
Peak family holiday time across the region for beaches, boats and BeWILDerfest. Book seal trips, activities and parking well ahead.
Still warm, with the crowds gone, so it's a great time for walking, golf and a quiet country retreat. Beach dog restrictions end on 30 September.
Beautiful autumn colour across Thetford Forest and half term days out with the children. Grey seals start pupping at the end of the month.
Grey seal pups arrive at Horsey, with the most births from mid November. Visit the viewing areas, then enjoy a cosy night in your home from home.
Frosty coastal walks, seal pups and a hot tub on the deck. Horsey gets busy over the Christmas holidays, so visit early in the day.

What to pack for East Anglia

It may be the driest region, but the wind off the North Sea is no joke.

  • Windproof jacket for the coast
  • Walking boots to explore the coast path and forest trails
  • Wellies for the salt marshes and days out across the area
  • Swimwear for the hot tub and the resort pool
  • Binoculars for seals, birds and local wildlife
  • Bikes or a bike rack for Thetford Forest
  • Fishing rod and rod licence for the lake
  • Golf clubs if you're staying near a course
  • Dog lead (Holkham and Horsey rules)
  • Old towel for sandy paws after a day on the beach
  • Picnic blanket for a great day at Holkham or Wells
  • Sun cream, as it really is that dry
  • Tide times for seal trips and local coastal walks
  • Cash for parking at Winterton
