Midlands Visitor's Guide

Log cabins in the Midlands sit in quiet woodland, many within an hour of Birmingham

Picture a frosty morning on Cannock Chase, fallow deer slipping between the silver birches, then a short walk back to your log cabin, where the private hot tub is already steaming on the deck. That's a weekend in the heart of England, and it's closer than you'd think. The log cabins Midlands guests book with us most often are less than an hour from Birmingham. Finish work on Friday and you'll be unpacking by teatime.

The Midlands is bigger than its reputation. Within a short drive of the West Midlands cities you'll find Staffordshire's heath and forest, Shakespeare's Warwickshire, the lakes of Leicestershire, the edge of the Peak District and the long ridge of the Malvern Hills. Drive times below are from the north side of Birmingham, around Walsall and Sutton Coldfield.

Lodges near Birmingham for a weekend break

Weekend breaks in the West Midlands work best when you don't spend half of them in the car, and many of the most popular log cabins are located within an hour of Birmingham.

Which cabins are closest to Birmingham?

Silver Trees is about 34 minutes from the West Midlands. Bosworth Lakeside and Knights Lodges are both under 50, less time than it takes to cross London! From Coventry, Bosworth and the Stratford retreat are the easy picks, and both welcome dogs.

How do you plan a Friday to Monday break?

  1. Book a three night stay so you get two full days out
  2. Leave Birmingham after lunch to miss the M6 rush
  3. Check the hot tub's ready, then explore the area on Saturday

Is Sutton Park worth a stop?

Yes, if your trip takes you north. Six miles from Birmingham city centre, it's a National Nature Reserve of around 2,400 acres with seven lakes, heathland and woods, and one of the largest city parks in Europe, popular with dog walkers.

Where are the best cabins in West Midlands countryside?

The West Midlands county itself is mostly Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and the Black Country, so the woodland log cabins are located a short drive out. Each area feels different, so pick the scenery first.

Cannock Chase, the nearest woods to Birmingham

Mainland England's smallest National Landscape packs heathland, ancient woodland and a herd of fallow deer into 26 square miles. In October the males cross the Chase for the rut, and you can hear them from the paths. Castle Ring, an Iron Age hillfort, and the Sherbrook Valley are popular walks to explore. On the northern edge, the National Trust's Shugborough Estate has 900 acres of parkland and a walled garden. It's the closest proper countryside to the West Midlands cities.

Warwickshire and Shakespeare country

Stratford is the big draw, with the Royal Shakespeare Company on the Avon and Shakespeare's Birthplace on Henley Street. Warwick Castle and the ruins of Kenilworth are within half an hour, and our guide to lodges near Warwick covers the castle town. Coventry, with its old and new cathedrals, is a short drive north.

Leicestershire and the National Forest

The National Forest spreads across 200 square miles of Staffordshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Explore Conkers in Moira, with 120 acres of trails and a barefoot walk, or visit the National Trust's Calke Abbey, where the Old Man of Calke is an oak thought to be around 1,200 years old.

Worcestershire and the Malvern Hills

The Worcestershire Beacon tops out at 425 metres. On a clear day you'll see the Cotswolds to the east and Wales to the west. A popular 4.5 mile loop starts at Upper Wyche, and our guide to lodges near Evesham covers the Vale below.

Shropshire and Ironbridge

West of Birmingham, in Shropshire, the hills get bigger and the roads quieter. The National Trust took over the Ironbridge Gorge museums in 2026 and reopened Blists Hill Victorian Town in May, so check opening times before you visit. For a Shropshire stay, The Astbury Golf and Lodge Resort has hot tub cabins in 300 acres of parkland, and our guide to lodges near Shrewsbury covers the county town.

Hot tub breaks in the West Midlands for couples

Three popular places are built just for grown-ups, and you'll find all of them within about an hour of the West Midlands.

Silver Trees for the deer

It's adults only and quiet in the evenings. Wild deer roam freely through the trees.

Bowbrook Lodges for the view

Bowbrook Lodges in Worcestershire is couples only, with cosy cabins and glamping safari tents looking towards the Cotswolds and the Malvern Hills. Sheep wander the fields, and guests give it a perfect 5.0.
