Surfers wait for sets off Fistral, gulls wheel over the harbour and the old white Huer’s Hut keeps watch from the headland, just as it did when fishermen relied on it to spot pilchards. Cornwall’s surf capital wraps around a string of sandy bays, from Towan Beach by the harbour to Watergate, with the Gannel estuary and Crantock on the far side of town. Spend the day in the waves or exploring the cliff path, then head back to your lodge and put your feet up.
We’ve picked six lodges near Newquay with top guest ratings, a mix of big holiday parks and small boutique sites, from manor grounds above Porth Cove to five-star homes with their own hot tubs near St Agnes. All of them are under 20 minutes from town, and three welcome dogs.

Drive times come from our own data, so allow extra time on summer Saturdays when the A392 into town gets slow.

Kids won’t want to leave. Hendra covers 80 acres of landscaped parkland minutes from the beach, and the same family has run it for more than 50 years, winning awards for its amenities and green tourism. There’s a huge variety of activities on offer, from Make a Bear and Mini 4x4s to sea scooters and aqua jet skis.
The bigger homes sleep up to 8, so it’s a popular pick for a family holiday with grandparents.

Fistral is where British surfing grew up. The British Surfing Association was formed here in 1966, and on a decent swell the line-up fills from dawn. Several local schools teach right on the sand or just behind it, so a first lesson is easy to book. Not keen to get wet? Grab a coffee and enjoy the show.
Dogs are allowed on Fistral Beach in every season, and there are toilets near the main steps.
A long, beautiful stretch of sand opens up below the cliffs at Watergate, and it’s a favourite spot for kite surfing and lessons. Every August the clifftop above it turns into the music arena for Boardmasters, which runs from 5 to 9 August 2026 with Fatboy Slim, Kasabian and Lily Allen at the top of the bill.
The contest, skate ramp and talks down on Fistral are free, but the music needs a ticket.
Start at the harbour and follow the headland out to Towan Head for views back along the coast and out to sea. On the way you’ll pass the Huer’s Hut, a little whitewashed lookout that may date back to the 14th century. From the 1500s a huer stood here watching for the reddish shimmer of pilchard shoals, then shouted “hevva, hevva” to send the boats out.
South of town, the tidal Gannel estuary separates Newquay from Crantock. From late May to the end of September, Fern Pit runs a crossing: a footbridge at low tide and a ferry at high tide. Check the tides first. On the far side you’ll discover a dune-backed beach and a picturesque village with two traditional pubs.
Looking for Newquay cottages with a hot tub instead of a park? Wish You Were Here in Crantock sleeps 4, has a private hot tub and an enclosed dog friendly garden, and sits within 1km of the shore.
Sir John Arundell rebuilt Trerice between 1570 and 1573, and you’ll find the date 1572 above the plaster overmantel in the great hall. Outside there are beautiful gardens to explore, including a knot garden, an orchard of heritage fruit and a lawn where you can play Kayling, a Cornish skittles game. The National Trust café is in the barn, where you can enjoy a cream tea.
Up the coast towards Padstow, the clifftop at Carnewas looks down on the giant rock stacks of Bedruthan. The steps down have been closed since cliff falls in 2019 and 2021, but the clifftop walk and tea room are well worth the trip, and National Trust members park free.
The Blue Reef Aquarium sits on Towan Promenade with plenty on offer: an underwater tunnel, seahorses, sharks and feeding talks.
Across town, Newquay Zoo fills 13 acres of botanical gardens by Trenance with keeper talks, live feeds and the Tarzan Trail. It opens daily from 10am except Christmas Day, closing earlier in winter.
At St Newlyn East, a short drive south, Lappa Valley runs little steam trains (including Zebedee) beside a boating lake, adventure golf and indoor soft play. It’s dog friendly and opens on selected dates, so book ahead. There are fireworks on 30 and 31 October too!
When the weather turns, the Eden Project is about 19 miles away, roughly a 31 minute drive, and its giant biomes are among Cornwall’s best rainy day destinations.
Most of them, most of the time, and here’s how the main spots stood at the time of writing:
Cornwall Council sets these rules in a three-year order, so always read the sign at the top of the slipway. Fines apply.
September is hard to beat. The sea’s still warm, the school holidays are over and prices drop. June runs it close, while August is warmest but busiest.
Yes, if you’re flexible. Prices are lowest from November to March outside the school holidays, and short breaks of three or four nights often cost far less than a full week in August. Look at what’s available midweek, too.
The other trick is to share, because a lodge that sleeps 8 or 12, like the bigger homes at Hendra or Piran Meadows, often works out cheaper per person than two smaller ones.
Most people travel by car to experience the coast at their own pace, using the A30 and then the A392 or A3058. By train, the Atlantic Coast Line runs hourly from Par through the Luxulyan Valley and takes about 50 minutes. Cornwall Airport Newquay is just north of the resort, and you’ll want a car or taxi for the last stretch.
Tick things off as you go, and your list stays saved on this device.
Fancy a quieter base nearby? Our guide to lodges near Bedruthan Steps covers the clifftops just north of the resort, and lodges near Padstow put you by the Camel estuary and its harbour. Further west, the St Ives lodge guide covers the far end of the county.

Yes. You’ll find lodges with hot tubs at Piran Meadows Resort and Perran Heights, and every holiday home at St Agnes Holiday Park has its own private hot tub.
Piran Meadows Resort, Perran Heights and St Agnes Holiday Park all welcome pets. Most Newquay beaches welcome dogs in every season, but Porth Beach bans them from 10am to 6pm between 15 May and 30 September.
Yes. Trains run hourly from Par and take about 50 minutes, though you’ll need a taxi to reach most parks.
No. The steps have been closed since cliff falls in 2019 and 2021, but the clifftop path and tea room at Carnewas are open.
Boardmasters runs from Wednesday 5 to Sunday 9 August 2026. The music is at Watergate Bay and needs a ticket, while the contest at Fistral is free to watch.
