Start the day with a swim in a tidal pool built into the rocks in 1930, wander the canal towpath past the swans, then spend the evening on your own decking while the sky over the Atlantic turns orange. That’s an ordinary day here. The town sits at the very top of Cornwall’s north coast, a few miles from the Devon border, and in July 2026 the Sunday Times named its main beach, Summerleaze, the best in the UK.
We’ve picked six parks with holiday lodges near Bude, Cornwall, from Bude Holiday Resort four minutes from the town centre to Eastcott Lodges out in the Tamar Valley. Every drive time is by road from the middle of town.
Five take dogs. Four have hot tubs.

Space, mostly. A self-catering lodge gives you separate bedrooms, a proper kitchen, a sofa with room for everyone, somewhere to dry wetsuits and, at several of these parks, a private hot tub on the deck, so you can come back with sandy children and a muddy dog and nobody minds. Parking matters too. Summerleaze car park, right behind the sand, has 421 spaces, and Cornwall Council charges there from 9am to midnight between April and October.
Staying a few minutes out means you choose when to drive in.

Summerleaze is the town beach, more than 300 metres of golden sand beside the mouth of the river and canal. The Sunday Times praised its “perfect sand, proper tea and a community of local people who care” when it crowned it the UK’s best for 2026. Tucked into the rocks at one end is Bude Sea Pool, about 91 metres long and topped up by every high tide. Visitors swim free, as the volunteer Friends of Bude Sea Pool run it on donations, and Visit Bude puts the water at around 11°C in April and 18°C by late summer.
Crooklets, just north, picks up good waves around mid tide. A short drive south, Widemouth Bay is a popular surf spot and widely seen as the most reliable in the area, and both have RNLI lifeguards in season.
Sandymouth is the dog walkers’ favourite.
The National Trust looks after it, with cliffs, a pebble ridge, a seasonal café and toilets, and dogs are welcome all year. Bring coins or the PayByPhone app, because the parking machines don’t take notes.
Down the coast towards Boscastle, the little bay at Crackington sits below High Cliff. It rises to 224 metres a mile south and is the highest cliff in Cornwall, so the views from the coast path above are huge. The Coombe Barton Inn, a 300 year old building right by the sand, welcomes families and dogs.
Cornwall Council runs seasonal dog restrictions on several beaches here, with a £100 fixed penalty for breaking them. This is how they stood when we checked in October 2026, so check the council page for the latest information before you go.

Outside those hours and dates dogs can go on all of them, though at the Sea Pool they need a lead and can’t go in the water.
Take an easy stroll from the sea lock up the canal towpath, which runs level and surfaced for about 2.5 miles to Helebridge. On the way you’ll pass Bude Marshes, Cornwall’s first Local Nature Reserve (declared in 1983), with a public bird hide over the reed beds. Back in town, hire a rowing boat, canoe or giant swan pedalo on the canal itself, then cross to The Castle Heritage Centre. The inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney built it in 1830, entry is free, and it’s open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 4pm.
Finish at Compass Point, where an octagonal storm tower from 1840 has the points of the compass carved into its sides.
Run by the same family since 1872, with dogs welcome in the bar, which serves the full menu.
Parts of this pub date back to 950AD, and the regular ales come from St Austell. Walk down to Hawker’s Hut afterwards, built from shipwreck timber by the Victorian vicar Robert Stephen Hawker and now the smallest of all the National Trust’s properties. Make a day of it.
Afternoon tea under oak beams salvaged from wrecks along this coast!
September, if you can: the sea’s at its warmest, the schools are back and summer dog rules end on the last day of the month.
