Visitor's guide

North Wales & Snowdonia Visitor's Guide

A lodge deck with a hot tub looks over a lake and mist on the hills of Snowdonia

Picture the mist lifting off Llyn Ogwen while the kettle boils, then a day on the steam railway up Yr Wyddfa, the beach at Pwllheli or the walls of Conwy, and back to your own decking before the light goes. That's lodge life in North Wales. You get the peaks of Snowdonia (Eryri in Welsh), the lakes near Bala, the sands of the Llŷn Peninsula and the quiet lanes of Anglesey, all within a short drive of each other.

We've pulled together the lodges in North Wales we'd book ourselves: real parks with hot tub lodges, pet-friendly log cabins and family places with a pool, near the mountains or right on the coast.

You'll also find the 2026 parking rules at Pen y Pass and the summer dog rules on the beaches. There's a month-by-month guide to picking your dates too.

Where should you stay in North Wales?

North Wales is bigger than it looks on the map, so pick your base by what you'll do most.

The heart of Snowdonia: Betws-y-Coed, Llanberis and the Ogwen Valley

Come here for the mountains. Betws-y-Coed sits where the Conwy and Llugwy rivers meet, with forest trails through Gwydyr Forest and Swallow Falls a couple of miles up the road. Llanberis is the base for Yr Wyddfa, the highest peak in Snowdonia, and its mountain railway, while the Ogwen Valley puts you right under Tryfan. There's more in our lodges near Betws-y-Coed guide.

  • Best for: hill walking, waterfalls and forest trails
  • Don't miss: the free National Slate Museum in Llanberis

Why stay near Bala and the lakes?

Llyn Tegid is the largest natural lake in Wales, and the Bala Lake Railway puffs along its shore from Llanuwchllyn. It's quieter than central Snowdonia, with paddleboarding, sailing and easy lakeside strolls. The market town of Dolgellau is about 18 miles south west, and our guide to lodges near Dolgellau covers that corner.

The Llŷn Peninsula and Cardigan Bay coast

Beaches, harbours and sea air. Pwllheli has its marina, and Porthmadog is the start of two heritage railways. There's more in our guide to lodges near Porthmadog.

  • Best for: beach days, sailing and rock-pooling
  • Good to know: some beaches have summer dog zones

Llandudno and Conwy

The Victorian seaside town of Llandudno curves round its bay beneath the Great Orme, a limestone headland where wild Kashmiri goats graze. Ride the Great Orme Tramway up from Victoria Station, which has run since 1902 and is the only cable-hauled tramway still working on British public roads. Conwy and its castle are a few miles along the coast. Both make an easy Snowdonia day out.

Is Anglesey worth crossing the bridge for?

Yes. Cross the Menai Strait from North Wales and explore a gentler landscape of farmland, lakes and coves. Beaumaris has its castle and seafront, and South Stack lighthouse sits on the cliffs at the western tip. See our Beaumaris lodge guide for the east side.

The Clwydian Range and Llangollen

Rolling hills, red kites, Offa's Dyke trails and old market towns such as Ruthin and Mold, near the border with England. Llangollen, with its canal and steam railway, is close enough for a day out, and our page on lodges near Llangollen has the parks near the Dee Valley.

Snowdonia lodges and North Wales parks we'd book

Drive times are measured by road from the middle of Snowdonia National Park, between Blaenau Ffestiniog and Dolwyddelan, so you can judge how far each park is from the mountains, and the table below sorts all six by drive time, size and pets.

  1. For adrenaline: Ogwen Bank, a 5-minute walk from Zip World
  2. For a lake view: Pen-y-Garth Lodges on Llyn Tegid
  3. For peace and quiet: Anglesey Lakeside Lodges
  4. For the beach: Gimblet Rock or Sunbeach
  5. For a bigger family or group: Plas Isaf, with up to four bedrooms

Ogwen Bank Caravan and Lodge Park, Gwynedd

Driving Distance: About 65 minutes (32.4 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Pet-friendly? Yes

Ogwen Bank lodges sit in ancient Snowdonia woodland beside the River Ogwen

What to expect: Twelve acres of ancient woodland beside the River Ogwen, inside Snowdonia National Park itself, so it's green, sheltered and peaceful.

Who will love it? Thrill seekers, mainly. Zip World is a 5-minute walk from the park near Bethesda, so you can fly down the quarry in the morning and be in your own hot tub by the afternoon. Dogs are welcome too, and guests rate it 4.5 out of 5.

Pen-y-Garth Lodges, Gwynedd

Driving Distance: About 45 minutes (22.8 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 8 | Pet-friendly? Yes

Pen-y-Garth is a short stroll from the shore of Llyn Tegid in Snowdonia

What to expect: Landscaped grounds a short stroll from Llyn Tegid, with the mountains of Snowdonia behind. Each lodge is placed to frame the countryside views.

Who's it for? Couples and families who want the lake on the doorstep and a quieter base. With room for up to 8 people, two families can share one lodge, dog included. It's rated 4.7.

Anglesey Lakeside Lodges, Anglesey

Driving Distance: About 73 minutes (42.1 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Pet-friendly? Yes

Contemporary lodges look out over landscaped lakes on Anglesey

What to expect: Contemporary lodges spaced across 9 acres of landscaped lakes, with countryside views over the rolling Anglesey hills.

Ideal for: anyone after peace and quiet. Guests score it 4.8, the joint highest of the parks here. It has hot tub lodges as well as pet-friendly ones.

Gimblet Rock, Gwynedd

Driving Distance: About 59 minutes (27.4 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 8 | Pet-friendly? Yes

Gimblet Rock sits on the Llŷn Peninsula right next to Pwllheli Marina

What to expect: About as close to the sea as you can get in North Wales. It sits next to Pwllheli Marina, with calm sailing water and long golden sands, and the mountains of Snowdonia a short drive inland.

Who should book? Families who want beach days, and anyone who sails. It sleeps up to 8, takes pets and is rated 4.6.

Sunbeach Holiday Park, Gwynedd

Driving Distance: About 63 minutes (32.1 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Pet-friendly? Yes | Indoor pool

Sunbeach is a beach-front park on Cardigan Bay with an indoor pool

What to expect: A beach-front park near Barmouth, between the Cambrian Mountains and Cardigan Bay, with an indoor pool on site. Rock-pooling, beachcombing and cycling all start from the gate.

Good for: families with children. Wet afternoon? The pool works well for that. The seaside towns of Barmouth and Aberdovey are near enough for days out by the sea, and it's rated 4.7.

Plas Isaf Lodge Retreat, Denbighshire

Driving Distance: About 76 minutes (41.3 miles by road) | Sleeps: Up to 8 | Pet-friendly? Yes

Plas Isaf lodges sit in a conservation area near the village of Caerwys

What to expect: A quiet spot just outside Caerwys, in a conservation area with clear streams and wide countryside views. Lodges have private decking and fully fitted kitchens, and some have a hot tub.

Who's it for? Groups and families, as lodges run from one to four bedrooms, with pet-friendly ones among them. Rated 4.8, it's a handy base in north east Wales for the Clwydian Range and the coast near Prestatyn.

Which lodges in North Wales have hot tubs and welcome dogs?

Hot tub lodges

Five of the six parks above have hot tub lodges, though not every unit has one, so check the lodge you pick. You can filter straight to lodges with a hot tub across the site.

A hot tub earns its keep here. After a wet day on the hills, sinking into hot water on your own decking while the cloud rolls off the tops is the best bit of the holiday, and it's why log cabins and lodges with a hot tub in Snowdonia book up first for autumn and winter weekends.

Pet-friendly log cabins and the beach rules

All six parks welcome pets, so the dog can explore the trails and beaches with you, and you can search every pet-friendly lodge we list. The beaches have rules, though. Gwynedd Council excludes dogs from parts of 18 beaches from 1 April to 30 September, including:

  • Barmouth, to the left of the Pavilion Cafe
  • Harlech, to the right of the main entrance
  • Abersoch, between the boatyard and the Golf Road car park
  • Pwllheli, Criccieth promenade beach, Aberdaron and Dinas Dinlle

Signs at each beach mark the zones, and the fixed penalty is £100. Bodnant Garden welcomes dogs on set days in summer and every day in winter, while Portmeirion only allows assistance dogs.

Romantic lodges and log cabins in Snowdonia for two

Couples, look at Anglesey Lakeside Lodges for lake and countryside views, or Pen-y-Garth for a romantic lodge near Llyn Tegid. For a romantic log cabin feel, Glampio Gelli Glamping by Llyn Tegid sleeps 2, has a hot tub and a fire stove, takes dogs and scores 4.8.

Book a table at one of the restaurants in Conwy. Walk the beach at sunset, then light the stove. Simple, romantic and very Welsh.

Days out from your North Wales lodge

1. Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and the Snowdon Mountain Railway

At 1,085 metres, Yr Wyddfa is the highest mountain in Wales, and you've got two ways up. Walk it on one of the six main paths, or take the easy way up on the Snowdon Mountain Railway from Llanberis, where Victorian steam and modern diesel trains climb to Hafod Eryri, the UK's highest visitor centre.

For 2026 the railway is running to the summit from 17 to 25 October, then to Clogwyn from 26 October to 1 November, after which trains stop for winter.

Hiking from Pen y Pass? Eryri National Park runs the 66-space car park as pre-book only until 1 November 2026, at £25 for up to 8 hours. No booking? Do this instead:

  1. Park at the Nant Peris park and ride or in Llanberis
  2. Catch the Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus up to Pen y Pass
  3. Set off up the Pyg Track or the Miners' Track from the bus stop

2. Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda

Velocity 2 is the longest zip line in Europe at 1,555 metres, and riders reach over 100mph above Penrhyn slate quarry. Ogwen Bank guests can get there in five minutes on foot!

3. Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways

Two narrow-gauge lines start at Porthmadog harbour. The Ffestiniog Railway climbs 13.5 miles into Snowdonia to Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the Welsh Highland runs 25 miles through Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn gorge to Caernarfon. Trains run daily from late March to the end of October.

4. Portmeirion

Clough Williams-Ellis's Italian-style village on the Dwyryd estuary is pure colour: pastel houses, domes and a sandy shore at low tide. Portmeirion's own guidance says parking is free and booking online is wise at busy times. Our lodges near Portmeirion page has the closest parks.

5. Conwy Castle and town walls

Walk the 13th-century town walls, then climb the castle's spiral stairs for views over the estuary; Cadw opens it 9:30am to 5pm until 31 October and 10am to 4pm from November to February. One section of wall between the Watch Tower and the Wing Gate is closed for repairs until around Easter 2027.

6. Swallow Falls and Betws-y-Coed

Swallow Falls drops in white tiers through the trees about 2 miles west of Betws-y-Coed. Entry is a few pounds at the turnstile, and dogs go free. Explore Gwydyr Forest on the way back and you've got a proper half-day out.

Getting to and around North Wales

By road

Most guests drive to North Wales. The A55 coast road runs along the north coast past Conwy and Bangor to Anglesey, and the A5 cuts through Betws-y-Coed and the Ogwen Valley. Distances look short on the map but are slow by road, so allow extra time on the mountain roads of Snowdonia.

By bus in Snowdonia

The Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses link Llanberis, Nant Peris, Pen y Pass and Betws-y-Coed. Leave the car at the lodge.

When's the best time to visit North Wales and Snowdonia?

It rains in North Wales, so plan for it. Capel Curig is one of the wettest places in Wales, with Met Office averages showing May as the driest month and December the wettest. Late spring and early autumn work well, with better weather, open attractions and quieter paths.

Quiet North Wales lodges and frosty hot tub nights. Snow can close high paths in Snowdonia.
Still wintry on the tops. Dogs can visit Conwy Castle's ground floor.
The heritage railways reopen late in the month.
Easter brings the first busy weekends. Gwynedd's summer dog zones start on 1 April.
Usually the driest month. Summit trains and Hafod Eryri reopen.
Long light evenings, quieter than August. Pre-book Pen y Pass early.
Llangollen's International Musical Eisteddfod and the Snowdon race.
Peak season. Beaches and car parks are at their busiest, so start early.
Warm sea, quieter paths and the Conwy Honey Fair.
Autumn colour in Betws-y-Coed and Marathon Eryri near Llanberis.
Wet and windy. Ideal for a romantic log cabin weekend with the burner lit.
The wettest month in Snowdonia, but Santa trains make up for it.

What to pack for Snowdonia log cabins and lodges

Mountain weather in Snowdonia changes fast, even in summer. Bring layers, and a bit more than you think you'll need.

  • Walking boots with good grip for wet Snowdonia slate
  • Waterproof jacket and overtrousers
  • Warm hat and gloves for the summits, even in summer
  • Paper OS map or offline map app, as signal drops in the valleys
  • Swimwear and a robe for the hot tub
  • Head torch for dark-sky evenings
  • Wellies for muddy forest paths
  • Dog lead and towel for beach and hill walks
  • Coins or a contactless card for small car parks and turnstiles
  • Binoculars for red kites and seabirds
  • Midge spray for summer evenings by the lakes
  • Your Pen y Pass parking booking, if you're walking Yr Wyddfa

North Wales lodge FAQs

Do I need to book parking at Pen y Pass?Yes, until 1 November 2026. The 66-space car park is pre-book only, at £25 for up to 8 hours. The Sherpa'r Wyddfa bus from Nant Peris or Llanberis is the easier choice for most walkers.
Can I ride the train to the summit of Snowdon in winter? No. The Snowdon Mountain Railway stops for winter after 1 November 2026, and the summit building, Hafod Eryri, closes after 25 October. Trains return in spring.
Which North Wales lodges have a hot tub?Ogwen Bank, Pen-y-Garth, Anglesey Lakeside Lodges, Sunbeach and Plas Isaf all have hot tub lodges, and so does Glampio Gelli. Check the lodge you pick, as not every unit on a park has one.
Are dogs allowed on beaches in North Wales? On most beaches, yes. Gwynedd Council bans dogs from parts of 18 beaches, such as Barmouth, Abersoch and Harlech, from 1 April to 30 September. Signs at each beach show the zones.
Can I take my dog to Portmeirion? No. Portmeirion only allows guide and assistance dogs, so plan another day out with the dog.
Is North Wales good for a lodge break in winter?Yes, if you like it quiet. Paths and roads are emptier, and a soak on the deck after a frosty hike is a real treat. Pack for rain, and check attractions are open before you set off.
Do I need a car for a lodge stay in North Wales? It helps, as most parks are rural. The Sherpa'r Wyddfa buses and the heritage railways cover many of the main sights, though.
Are there lodges with a swimming pool in North Wales?Yes. Sunbeach Holiday Park on Cardigan Bay has an indoor pool, which is handy with children on a wet day.

From lakeside lodges on Llyn Tegid to sea views at Pwllheli and a hot tub under the Glyderau, there's a lodge in North Wales for every kind of trip. Browse every one of our lodges in North Wales on the Wales lodges page, or start at Book Holiday Lodge to find your dates.
