Kellie Castle is a National Trust for Scotland property in the East Neuk of Fife. Its oldest towers date back to the 14th century, and the Lorimers, a famous artistic family, overhauled the interior in the late 19th century.

St Andrews Castle is a ruin on a rocky promontory overlooking Castle Sands and the North Sea. It began as a bishop's palace and later served as a fortress and state prison. You enter through a visitor centre with displays on its history, some of the best surviving carved fragments from the castle, and a shop.

St Andrews Cathedral in Fife was begun in 1158 and was the largest church ever built in Scotland. The ruins show it was around 119 metres long. It was the seat of the Archbishops of St Andrews and the centre of the medieval Catholic Church in Scotland, and legend says Robert the Bruce rode up the aisle on his horse when it was consecrated in 1318.

The R&A World Golf Museum sits in St Andrews, recognised worldwide as the home of golf, directly opposite the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse. Across six gallery zones, thousands of objects tell the story of the game, from its medieval origins to world-class championships, including The Open. You'll see golf's earliest societies, evolving equipment, golf fashion and over 100 historic clubs on display.

Tip: Book tickets online at least 48 hours ahead for an early bird discount. There's a large car park beside the museum on Bruce Embankment.

V&A Dundee is Scotland's design museum, set on Dundee's waterfront. It was the first building in the UK designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, whose idea was a "living room for the city", and its outer wing reaches out over the River Tay. It is also the only V&A museum outside London.

Falkland Palace, in the Fife village of Falkland, is a royal palace of the Scottish kings and was one of the favourite places of Mary, Queen of Scots. It began as a royal hunting lodge, grew into a castle, and was later transformed by James IV and James V into a Renaissance-style palace.

Tip: Look out for the Chapel Royal, dedicated to Thomas the Apostle, within the palace.

RRS Discovery is the wooden three-masted ship built in Dundee in 1901 for Antarctic research. She carried Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton on the Discovery Expedition, and she was the last traditional wooden three-masted ship built in the United Kingdom.

The McManus is Dundee's art gallery and museum, housed in a Category A listed Gothic Revival building designed by George Gilbert Scott. Eight galleries across two floors follow the story of the city, from a small settlement to the Dundee of today, taking in 400 million years of history along the way.

Tip: The nearest public car parks are Bell Street, Overgate and Wellgate, each a 5-10 minute walk away.
