A brooding border fortress in remote Liddesdale, once called the guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain.
Hermitage Castle is a semi-ruined stronghold in the remote valley of the Hermitage Water, in Scotland's wild border country. It was targeted for 400 years because of its role in controlling the Scottish Middle March, and it has a name as one of the most sinister and atmospheric castles in Scotland.
Tip: In the summer season (1 April to 31 October) it is covered by the Historic Environment Scotland Explorer Pass, but not in winter, so check before you go.

A much-besieged border fortress where Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner, with a military museum inside.
Carlisle Castle guarded the western end of the Anglo-Scottish border for hundreds of years and survived seven sieges by the Scots between 1174 and 1461. It was later adapted for artillery, and in 1568 it held Mary Queen of Scots prisoner. It stayed in military use well into the 20th century.

Vindolanda was a Roman auxiliary fort just south of Hadrian's Wall, near the village of Bardon Mill in Northumberland. It was occupied from roughly 85 AD to 370 AD and is one of Europe's most important Roman archaeological sites, with live excavations taking place every year.
Tip: Combine it with the Roman Army Museum on one Saver Ticket, and check the tour timetable for the guided fort tours.

A moated, triangular medieval castle with a drawbridge, twin-towered gatehouse and a border-conflict history.
Caerlaverock is a moated castle on the southern coast of Scotland, about seven miles south of Dumfries. Its triangular shape is unique among British castles, and it has a wide moat, a twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements. First built in the 13th century, it was the stronghold of the Maxwell family and was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Tip: Head up to the South range for the best views over the moat, then follow the short nature trail to the older castle's foundations.

Annandale Distillery in Annan, Dumfries and Galloway, makes single malt Scotch whisky and describes itself as Scotland's only single cask single malt distillery. Every cask is bottled on its own, never vatted. The distillery was founded in 1836, closed in 1924 and was restored after 2007, and it now sits beside a visitor centre.
Tip: Finish your visit with a stop at the Maltings Coffee Shop.

We had a fantastic stay! The house was surprisingly well stocked and super cosy, which was perfect on that rainy December day. The bath was lovely and the shower was a decent size-definitely a highlight. The fact that its near a flight path didnt bother us at all and its perfect for dogs scared of fireworks since its so remote. Beautifully converted place, really enjoyed it!

We really enjoyed our stay! The kitchen corner was a bit dark since theres only a row of spotlights down the centre, so we thought a bit of extra lighting might help, but honestly its no biggie. We also mentioned maybe adding some hooks in the hot tub area for hanging towels or robes and possibly a small shelf or st and to hold a tablet or speaker for watching or listening to music - just little tweaks. Overall, it was a fantastic weekend and were already thinking about coming back someday! Nothing major, just small suggestions for an even better stay. Cheers!

The place itself is adorable, with its charming half-timbered look and a comfy bed that we didnt want to leave. The shower was powerful and the heating kept everything cosy. Parking right outside was a real bonus and we enjoyed walking through the fields to Thaxted. Definitely recommend for a peaceful getaway!

Pauline was absolutely lovely, always ready with helpful tips about local spots and road updates, which was really thoughtful. She even checked in on us to make sure everything was alright, which we appreciated. Were already looking forward to our next visit. Would definitely recommend it, though wed hate for it to get so popular we can't get a booking!

We had a lovely stay at Riverview, our pod with the hottub was just so lovely. The park itself was really quiet and peaceful. There isn't much around so be prepared to drive to different areas for shops etc.
