Step inside the thatched cottage in Alloway where Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, was born.
Burns Cottage is the birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland's national poet, who was born here in 1759. Built by his father, William Burnes, in 1757, it is a long, low, thatched building of clay with four rooms, set on the main street of Alloway in South Ayrshire. It forms part of the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.
Tip: Head for the kitchen alcove first to see the bed box where Burns was born.

Robert Adam's clifftop castle sits in a country park of woods, beaches and play areas on the Ayrshire coast.
Culzean Castle is a clifftop castle on the Ayrshire coast, designed by Robert Adam in the late 18th century for the 10th Earl of Cassillis. Inside, the dramatic Oval Staircase is the centrepiece, and there is a big collection of flintlock pistols and military swords. General Eisenhower was given an apartment at the top of the castle, and he stayed there several times.
Tip: The estate is big, so download the map or pick one up on arrival. Waymarked trails offer four different routes around the park.

A South Ayrshire road where cars seem to roll uphill, thanks to a clever optical illusion.
The Electric Brae is a famous gravity hill on the A719, south of Dunure and not far from Ayr in South Ayrshire. The road looks as though it runs uphill, yet a suitably free-running vehicle will slowly move off from a standstill, as if something were pulling it up the slope.
Tip: The illusion runs between the bend overlooking Croy railway viaduct and Craigencroy Glen, so that quarter-mile stretch is the part to head for.

Dumfries House is a Palladian country house near Cumnock in Ayrshire, built in the 1750s by the architects John and Robert Adam. It is known for still holding much of its original 18th-century furniture, including pieces specially commissioned from Thomas Chippendale. The house was saved for the nation in 2007 and now serves as the headquarters of The King's Foundation charity.

Dean Castle is a 14th century stronghold in Kilmarnock, once home to the Boyd family, who were lords of Kilmarnock for over 400 years. We had such a lovely time at this cosy cottage tucked away on a working farm. Its surprisingly private and the owners, Robert and Sharon, couldnt be nicer. The place is really spacious, with well-equipped kitchen and bathroom and the bed was super comfy - we slept like logs! The garden is perfect for dogs, totally secluded and has nice furniture for relaxing outside. Plenty of walks nearby and Thaxteds eateries, especially The Star and The Maypole, are worth a visit. Wed definitely recommend it!
We spent a week here in mid-July with our two mini dachshunds and honestly, it was a lovely stay. The cottage itself is charming and the hot tub was a real highlight-especially during the scorching days, it was so nice to have a cool, refreshing dip. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming, which made us feel right at home. It was nice to see their dogs being taken out to the fields daily too. Being near Stansteds flight path was actually pretty entertaining; we enjoyed watching the planes land. Would definitely recommend this place!

Its a truly relaxing spot with everything you need for a comfy stay. Highly recommend!

The hot tubs lighting was pretty poor - only one dim outside light, so we had to keep the toilet light on just to see! Still, overall, it was a relaxing stay, just a bit let down by the lighting situation. Wouldnt mind returning, though.
