Picture a whitewashed fishing village spilling down a wooded cliff to a 14th-century harbour, with donkeys in the stables at the top and the Bristol Channel shining at the bottom. That’s Clovelly. There are no cars on its cobbled street, one family has owned it for over 400 years, and it’s one of the loveliest days out in North Devon.
The five parks below are real and bookable, between about 20 and 32 minutes away along the A39. You’ll get your own private space with parking outside, room for the children and, at most of them, a hot tub or a fishing lake. After the cabins comes a local’s guide to the village of Clovelly, with walks, days out, 2026 prices and a month-by-month planner.
No hauling cases down the cobbles.
All five sit west or south of Clovelly, towards the Cornish border. Sort the table by drive time, or tap a filter to see only the ones that welcome dogs.

The closest of the five, just over the border near Bude, with beaches, old market towns and Cornish pubs serving local seafood all within reach.
Driving Distance: About 25 minutes (14.1 miles) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Rated 4.6/5

Sandymouth is the lively one. Part of the Go Active collection, it’s a family friendly resort with Sandymouth Bay just down the lane.
Driving Distance: About 26 minutes (15.1 miles) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Rated 4.9/5
The top-rated choice here. Ivyleaf Combe belongs to the Autograph collection and sits in a wooded valley two miles from Bude and its Blue Flag beaches, where the spacious cabins have views over trees and countryside. It’s peaceful, private and well placed for both coasts.
Driving Distance: About 30 minutes (16.4 miles) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Rated 4.7/5

Lawns, fuchsias and lavender fill these 45 acres, a gentle stroll from the turquoise water of the North Cornwall coast. Come back from the cobbles, have a swim, then sit out on the sun terrace with a drink from the café bar.
Driving Distance: About 32 minutes (16.8 miles) | Sleeps: Up to 6 | Rated 4.6/5

A tree-lined drive leads down to 25 acres of woodland teeming with wildlife. Every cabin has a view over the water. It’s the nearest thing on our books to a lakeside fishing holiday.

Yes, but not through us. Clovelly Lakes is a family-run North Devon site at Higher Clovelly, just off the A39, with five spring-fed lakes stocked with carp, tench, bream, perch, roach and rudd. Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, they sleep from 2 to 8, and a few have their own tubs. Book direct.
After the same mix of fish, water and bubbles? Bulworthy Forest has four lakes outside the door and Ivyleaf Combe has fishing in its own valley, both about half an hour away.
The village is privately owned, and you pay once at the Visitor Centre at the top. For 2026 that’s £10.90 for adults and £6.25 for children aged 7 to 16, with under 7s free and a family ticket at £27. Your ticket covers parking, a 20-minute film, two museums and the walled gardens, and you can come back free within 7 days.
Allow two to three hours, longer with lunch.
Built like a traditional Devon long barn, the Visitor Centre has a café and shop. Just below it are the craft workshops, including a pottery where you can make and decorate your own pot, and the old stables where the Clovelly donkeys live; for centuries they hauled goods up the hill on sledges. Halfway down, pop into the tiny chapel of St Peter, built in 1846 and still in use, then rest at Mount Pleasant by the war memorial.
Step inside a fisherman’s family home of the 1930s, complete with a sail loft and straw mattresses in the attic. Next door you’ll learn about Charles Kingsley, who grew up here and wrote Westward Ho!
At the foot of the steep cobbled street, the old quay shelters a handful of boats and the Red Lion, where you can sit with a pint and watch the tide. Wander the pebble beach to a small waterfall, with a cave behind it where legend says Merlin was born.
Up at the top, Clovelly Court Gardens hide restored Victorian glasshouses and espaliered fruit trees behind high walls.
The South West Coast Path runs right through, so you can step straight out onto the cliff tops. Head west through the woods and you’ll drop down to Mouth Mill, a rocky cove where a stream meets the sea. Start from the National Trust car park at Brownsham for a circular route.
East of the cottages, the Hobby Drive is a peaceful woodland track built between 1811 and 1829 to give local men work after the Napoleonic wars. It’s gorgeous in autumn.
Hartland Abbey opens from late March to early October, Sunday to Thursday, and its Bluebell Sundays in April are worth planning a spring break around. Just beyond, Hartland Quay sits at the end of the road among jagged rock.
Sailings leave Bideford or Ilfracombe up to four times a week from late March to late October, taking under two hours. Watch for seals, and puffins in late spring! Prefer to stay near that harbour? Try our lodges near Ilfracombe.
The Big Sheep near Bideford has sheep races and Devon’s largest family roller coaster, while The Milky Way Adventure Park, a few minutes from the village, mixes rides, live shows and indoor play.
Appledore’s narrow lanes and the surf at Croyde are an easy drive along the North Devon coast. Heading south? The Arthurian headland at Tintagel is about an hour away, and Dartmoor makes a good inland day.
Summer brings the longest opening hours and the Lobster and Crab Feast at the end of August. Quieter months are just as good, though. Come for the Herring Festival on Sunday 15 November 2026 or the RNLI Christmas lights. Clovelly lodges are easiest to book outside the school holidays, when you’ll have the cobbles almost to yourself.
Tick these off as you go; the list stays saved on this device.
Most places here sleep up to six, so two families can share and split the bill.
The closest, Pentire Coastal Holiday Park, is about 20 minutes’ drive. Sandymouth is about 25 minutes, Ivyleaf Combe 26, Bude Coastal Resort 30 and Bulworthy Forest about 32, all via the A39.
Yes. One entry fee covers parking, the film, Fisherman’s Cottage and the Kingsley Museum, plus the walled gardens. Under 7s go free and your ticket lets you come back within 7 days.
Yes, on a lead, and there are bins along the way. Four of the five parks above take pets; Ivyleaf Combe isn’t marked as pet friendly.
The High Street isn’t, as it’s cobbled, steep and slippery when wet. The Visitor Centre, stables, workshops and Court Gardens are accessible, and the Land Rover runs between the quay and the top from Easter to October.
A cottage in the village puts you right on the cobbles, but no cars can get down there, so you carry your bags. A lodge gives you a full kitchen, the car outside, room for the children and the village a short drive away.
Allow two to three hours for the village, longer if you add the walk to Mouth Mill or the Hobby Drive. Plenty of people pair it with Hartland Quay on the same day.
Yes. Clovelly Lakes at Higher Clovelly books direct, and on our site Bulworthy Forest has four lakes and Ivyleaf Combe has fishing on site. You’ll need an Environment Agency rod licence.
Ready? Pick a place above or browse lodge holidays across the UK, and you’ll soon be wandering down those cobbles.
