Threave Castle stands on an island in the River Dee, about 2.5 kilometres west of Castle Douglas. Archibald the Grim built it in the 1370s, and it was a stronghold of the Black Douglases, Earls of Douglas and Lords of Galloway, until their fall in 1455.

MacLellan's Castle stands in the centre of Kirkcudbright, on the south side of the River Dee. Building began around 1577 for Thomas MacLellan, on the site of a ruined Greyfriars monastery. The castle was never finished, and the roof had collapsed by the time the family sold it in 1752. It is now in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
Tip: Look for the peephole behind the great hall fireplace and the carved coats of arms above the entrance.

Caerlaverock is a moated castle on the southern coast of Scotland, about seven miles south of Dumfries. Its triangular shape is unique among British castles, and it has a wide moat, a twin-towered gatehouse and lofty battlements. First built in the 13th century, it was the stronghold of the Maxwell family and was besieged by the English during the Wars of Scottish Independence.
Tip: Head up to the South range for the best views over the moat, then follow the short nature trail to the older castle's foundations.

Sweetheart Abbey is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1273 in the village of New Abbey, about 8 miles south of Dumfries. Dervorguilla of Galloway founded it in memory of her husband, John de Balliol. She kept his embalmed heart in an ivory and silver casket for the rest of her life, and it was buried alongside her. She named the abbey Dulce Cor, Latin for Sweet Heart.

Bladnoch is a Lowland single malt distillery on the banks of the River Bladnoch, near Wigtown. Founded in 1817, it is the most southerly whisky distillery in Scotland, and it has a long and eventful history of closing and reopening.
Tip: Tours are appointment-only, so book by midnight the day before. The visitor centre and café are open Tuesday to Saturday only. Tours are not suitable for wheelchair users or walking aids, and high heels are not allowed.

Drumlanrig Castle is the Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, set on the Queensberry Estate in Dumfries and Galloway. Built between 1679 and 1689 from distinctive pink sandstone, the "Pink Palace" overlooks the Nith Valley and has 120 rooms, 17 turrets and four towers. Inside is part of the Buccleuch art collection, including Rembrandt's An Old Woman Reading, along with tapestries and other objects of art.

All the furniture and fittings all worked and were very clean. The lack of indoor living area was the factor for the average score for comfort and furnitre and fittings. Along with having no oven mitt and no microwave.
Beautiful location and perfect for couples. So peaceful. The chalet was perfect for us, very spacious! The only let downs where that the mattres was very hard making it a little difficult to get comfortable and there was quite a bit of dust on arrival.
Me and my boyfriend booked a 3 night stay for his birthday and the lodge and surrounding areas are stunning! Lots of nature walks, hikes, beaches and National Trust places to visit nearby. Friendly locals and good places for food too Everything you need is in the lodge and it's peaceful and quite all around! We were visited by a lovely Collie a couple times, no idea who he belonged to but there was lots of cattle nearby so he must be a farmers dog. He spent lots of time cuddled up to me sunbathing and enjoying belly scratches On arrival our hot tub was not working and the owner tried her best to get it repaired by various handymen but it was needing some proper TLC so unfortunately it couldn't be fixed for our stay but the owner was really lovely and apologetic about the problem and she came to our cabin to apologise in person and we received a refund for the difference of a cabin with no hot tub! This didn't change how must we loved our stay and how much fun we had. Barstobrick is beautiful and I highly recommended visiting The Pond Lodges

The lodge was everything it said it was in the ad description, it's a fantastic place for walking, birdwatching and visiting the many castles, as well as hours spent sketching and painting the awesome countryside.
The space was really well planned and felt quite large. We were really lucky with the weather so made the most of the outside hot tub and space. The cover bar of the hot tub was broken when we arrived but it was quickly fixed without us having to report it so the site is very well maintained. Very new, quiet and clean.
I really had a lovely stay and the lodge was lovely and clean only thing I would say about the lodge is that the bed was very uncomfortable but didnt stop us enjoying our stay

We had a lovely stay! The place was super peaceful and spotless, with all the essentials like plates, cups, glasses, pans and even washing up liquid. Only thing missing was shower gel and shampoo, but we brought our own. The mattress needs replacing though-wasn't very comfy.
We stayed at the lodge for four nights and found it just as described-spotlessly clean and well-equipped. The only downside was the bed; those springs really dug in and the pillows were quite flat, which others had also mentioned. On a brighter note, Bob the resident dog was adorable and so welcoming - he was clearly excited to see us after our walks. Wed definitely return!
The lodge was exactly as described.Very clean and had everything we needed for our 4 night stay.Our only issue was the bed, there was springs digging into our body and the pillows were very flat. Other reviews had also mentioned this.The resident Dog Bob was very friendly and welcomed us back after a walk, he looked so excited to see us and get a cuddle.I'd definitely go back.

We stayed at Cherry Lodge and honestly, it had everything we needed for a short break. The kitchen was compact but fully stocked and the shower was really good. The double bed looked out onto a stunning view and the breakfast bar with stools was a nice touch. The hot tub on the decking was definitely a highlight, with comfy chairs to relax and enjoy the scenery. Would happily return!

We had such a lovely time at The Pond Lodges! The setting is absolutely gorgeous, surrounded by nature, which makes it a perfect spot to unwind. The lodges themselves are really comfortable and well-equipped. The staff were friendly and attentive, making sure everything was just right. Whether you're after a romantic break or a quiet family escape, wed definitely recommend it. Can't wait to go back!

The holiday was truly lovely, especially for couples wanting some quiet time. The lodges nestled in the hills created a stunning valley vibe. We loved relaxing in the warm hot tub and watching the horses wander past. Honestly, it was quite a special experience, would happily go back!

Lovely stay, would return
We stayed in the Maple Lodge and honestly, it was pretty lovely. Everything we needed was there, from comfy furniture to all the essentials. The outdoor seating area was a nice touch, perfect for relaxing evenings. The hot tub was a highlight, though we did notice it wasnt covered, which was a bit of a shame. On our first night, the weather was perfect, so we made the most of it, but the next day, heavy rain meant we had to use the hot tub cover as a makeshift shelter! Itd be great if they added covers over the hot tubs, like the other lodges seem to have. Still, overall, a great stay!
