A Neolithic stone circle on a hilltop above Keswick, ringed by Lake District fells.
Castlerigg is a Neolithic stone circle on a prominent hill east of Keswick, in the Lake District National Park. English Heritage calls it one of the most atmospheric and dramatically sited of all British stone circles. The stones are glacial boulders of volcanic rock, set in a flattened ring with an unusual rectangle of extra stones inside it.
Tip: Parking at the site is limited. Walking from the centre of Keswick takes about 30 minutes, so consider that or public transport.

The Derwent Pencil Museum in Keswick tells the story of the pencil, from its beginnings as a cottage industry to modern production. A red-sandstone castle near Penrith, with a great keep, a double gatehouse and panoramic views over the Eden Valley.
Brougham Castle is a red-sandstone castle standing near the site of a Roman fort, guarding a river crossing south-east of Penrith. It was founded in the early 13th century by Robert de Vieuxpont, and his great keep still dominates the site. The powerful Clifford family later added more buildings, including an unusual double gatehouse and the Tower of League.
Tip: Head up the spiral stairs to the top of the keep for panoramic views over the Eden Valley.

Lowther Castle is a ruined country house near Penrith, built in the early 19th century and left as a dramatic shell after the roof was removed and the building demolished in the 1950s. You can explore the ruins, then wander the 130 acres of gardens, which include the Parterre, the Garden-in-the-Ruins, the Rose Garden, wildflower meadows and rambling woodland.
Tip: Walk out to the Western Terrace for a spectacular view over the Lowther Valley to the Lake District mountains, and dress for all weathers.

Step inside the Grasmere cottage where Wordsworth wrote some of his best-known poetry.
Dove Cottage is the whitewashed Lakeland house on the edge of Grasmere where William Wordsworth lived with his sister Dorothy. It is a Grade I listed building that remains largely unchanged from Wordsworth's day. Visits begin with an introductory tour led by a member of the team, taking you through rooms with slate floors and oak panelling.
Tip: Entry to the cottage is at timed slots, so book ahead online to secure your tour.

Medieval castle ruins once home to Richard III, set in a public park beside Penrith station.
Penrith Castle is a ruined medieval fortress in the west of the town, on the edge of the Lake District. It was begun in the late 14th century by Ralph Neville to help defend the area against the Scots, and was later turned into a luxurious residence by Richard, Duke of Gloucester, who became Richard III.
Tip: Parking is around the town, with only a few spaces at the park entrance, so be prepared to park nearby.

A house-sized boulder in Borrowdale that you can climb to the top by ladder.
The Bowder Stone is a huge andesite lava boulder in Borrowdale, balanced on its side after falling from the crag above thousands of years ago. It stands about 30 feet high and is thought to weigh around 2,000 tons. Today the National Trust cares for it.
Tip: There is a National Trust car park at Bowderstone (CA12 5XA) about a 15-minute walk from the stone. Check the National Trust Borrowdale page for current parking details before you go.

A Victorian neo-gothic castle with parkland, woodland walks and a shingle beach on the western shore of Windermere.
Wray Castle is a Victorian neo-gothic building on the west shore of Windermere, looked after by the National Trust. The parkland has waymarked trails that start at the front of the castle, and the lakeshore has a shingle beach with easy access to the water.
Tip: You can arrive without a car: the Windermere Lake Cruises Green Cruise calls at Wray jetty from Ambleside, and it is a short walk up to the castle and café.

We had a really relaxing stay at this place. The hot tub was a big hit! The house is well kitted out and the owners are lovely. If you're after some peace and quiet, this is spot on. Highly recommend!

We had such a lovely weekend here! The place was perfect for what we needed and we really enjoyed our stay. The garden was great for the pups - Luna especially loved it and was wagging her tail non-stop, which apparently caused her a bit of strain! Definitely coming back, its a gem for both hoomans and pets alike.
We stayed in this cosy cottage and loved how peaceful it was, perfect for relaxing. The hot tub was a real treat and the owners were so helpful without being intrusive. Just right!
We had a lovely stay at this cottage tucked away on a working farm, which surprisingly felt very private. Robert and Sharon are such friendly hosts, making everything feel welcoming. The place itself is really spacious, with a well-equipped kitchen and a comfy bed that we didnt want to get out of! The garden is perfect for dogs, really secluded and nicely furnished. Plenty of walks nearby and we enjoyed dining out in Thaxted - The Star and The Maypole are our favourites. Definitely recommend!

We had a pretty decent stay overall. The pod was super cosy and kept us warm, especially after a day out walking. The bedding and towels were spotless, which was a relief. The bathroom was clean and functional and the kitchen served its purpose well enough. Its location was perfect for exploring Keswick and Blencathra, so we couldn't complain there. That said, a few things could be better - some crockery and cutlery were a bit dirty, so we had to wash them first. The floor was a bit gritty underfoot and storage was quite limited, just a few hangers. Also, being right next to the A66 meant it was pretty noisy at times. A little welcome pack wouldve been a nice touch too. With a bit more attention, this place could easily be four stars, but the road noise keeps it at a solid three for us.
The pod was spotless and super tidy. Parking was hassle-free and the lit path made heading back easy and safe. Would stay again!
We just got back from a lovely week at Goddards Mead. The cottage had everything we needed and was super cosy. The hosts were really friendly and welcoming. Even on a busy farm, it felt peaceful and quiet. Definitely recommend!

Our dog loved the nearby walks and meeting the farm animals, especially Penelope the pig. The host was super friendly and quick to respond. Definitely planning to return - great value for money too!

We recently stayed here for our honeymoon and it was just lovely. The location was quite convenient, not too far from everything we wanted to explore. Plus, having a dog-friendly place was a real bonus - our pup had a great time too! We'd definitely come back.

We spent a week here in July with our two tiny dachshunds who loved every minute, especially making friends in the charming village of Thaxted. The cottage itself is lovely and the hot tub was a real highlight - perfect for cooling off during the scorching weather. The hosts were really welcoming; it was nice to see their horses being taken out daily. Being close to Stansteds flight path was actually quite fun, watching the planes come in. All in all, wed definitely recommend for a relaxing break!

Road a bit noisy but you get use to it
Perfect. Great location for exploring the Lakes. Yes, traffic noise from the A66, but not at night, just an occasional lorry. Clean, everything thought of (toilet roll, washing up liquid, soap, towels etc). If a bit chilly, just put the underfloor heating on. Super hot shower. Everything catered for. Entry is from a single track leading up to the farm, through the farm yard which is a tad bumpy, but no problem at all. I was concerned that I may meet another vehicle on the track (hopeless at reversing). I didn't luckily. I enjoyed every second of my four day stay. Thank you
A very cosy cabin ideally located for a trip up Blencathra and the surrounding hills
Lovely place to stay. The fridge and freezer compartments were quite large, the bed was comfortable too. Although I did see a few hairs on the pillow from the last occupant. Unfortunately, the location is a little bit too close to the A66, this doesn't make it particularly noisy but more so awkward from a commuting perspective if you need to walk to the bus stop since you'd walk very close to fast passing cars. The beauty of the surroundings more than compensates and bear in mind the above would of course be very convenient for drivers.
Overall the place was clean, staff were extremely helpful and friendly- the owner was really kind and picked up my friend who was a bit lost and scared of the passing cars, the complimentary cleaning products were also handy. I'd definitely book a stay there again and would highly recommend.
