Layer Marney Tower is a Grade I listed early Tudor house in Essex, built in rich red brick with some of the finest Italianate terracotta in the country. Its gatehouse is the tallest Tudor example in Britain, and it was begun by Henry, 1st Lord Marney, who served Henry VIII as Lord Privy Seal.

Gainsborough's House is the birthplace of the English painter Thomas Gainsborough, in the Suffolk town of Sudbury. It is now a museum and gallery in a Grade I listed building, parts of which date back to around 1500. It is described as the National Centre for Gainsborough, with a large collection of his oil paintings, works on paper and artefacts on permanent display.

A coastal fort at Felixstowe with centuries of military history and views over the Port of Felixstowe.
Landguard Fort guards the approach to Harwich Harbour, and it was the site of the last opposed seaborne invasion of England, when the Dutch landed in 1667 and were repulsed by the Royal Marines. The current fort dates from the 18th century and was altered in the 19th, with further batteries added in the 19th and 20th centuries. It was manned through both World Wars.
Tip: Book tickets in advance on the Landguard Fort Trust website, though you can also buy them on arrival.

Helmingham Hall is a moated manor house in Suffolk, begun by John Tollemache in 1480 and owned by the Tollemache family ever since. The house itself is not open to the public, but you can admire it from the grounds, with its 60-foot-wide moat and two working drawbridges that have been pulled up every night since 1510.

The place itself is really spacious, with well-equipped kitchens and bathrooms-everything you need. The bed was super comfy, which was a bonus. The garden is perfect for dogs, completely secluded and nicely furnished. Plenty of nice walks nearby and Thaxted's restaurants like The Star and The Maypole are worth a visit. Wed definitely recommend it!

We had a fantastic stay at this cosy spot tucked away in such a peaceful, private setting. The hosts were super friendly and always on hand if we needed anything, yet they respected our space completely. After a long cycling day, the hot tub was just what we needed - absolute bliss! The only thing to note is that the cottage is right under Stansteds flight path, so theres quite a bit of aircraft noise. It took us a couple of hours to get used to it, but honestly, it didnt ruin our holiday at all. Wed definitely come back!

Rob and Sharon have done an amazing job transforming this historic building and they were so welcoming from the moment we arrived - made us feel right at home, along with Bonnie. The location is perfect for exploring Essex; we loved wandering around Thaxted and nearby villages to soak up the charming atmosphere and learn about the area's rich history. Definitely recommend!

The place has everything you need for a relaxing break. The locations perfect for exploring Essex, especially Thaxted and the surrounding villages with all their charming history and beautiful buildings. Highly recommend!

Every thing you need if you have children tesco kfc mcdonald's it's all about 5 min walk site is clean and tidy staff are grate all in all 10 out of 10 we travel 5 hours to get there and will do again
