It was the burial place of early Kentish kings and archbishops, and it ran for nearly a thousand years until its dissolution in 1538. Today the preserved ruins show how the site grew from a Saxon foundation into a grand Norman monastery.

We had such a lovely stay at Goddard's Mead! Rob and Sharon have really put a lot of effort into transforming this historic building sympathetically and it shows. They gave us a warm welcome, along with their adorable dog Bonnie. The place is perfect for relaxing and the location in Essex is ideal for exploring Thaxted and the surrounding villages. Definitely worth taking some time to wander around and soak in the history and charming architecture. Highly recommended!
