Northumberland lodges with hot tubs look out over Kielder Water and the forest

Picture it: steam curling off your private hot tub, Kielder's pines going black against the last of the light, and a sky so dark the Milky Way turns up on its own. By day there are castles on the headlands, puffins off Seahouses, a tidal island and the finest stretch of Hadrian's Wall. Book one of the lodges in Northumberland we list and all of that sits within an hour or so of your deck.

We've picked six real parks, from forest cabins a mile from Kielder village to a riverside park in Wooler with an indoor pool.

You'll also find the opening dates, dog rules and tide times most guides skip, plus a month by month planner.

Why book lodges in Northumberland for your next break?

Space, mostly. Northumberland, England's most northerly county, runs from the North Sea coast to the Cheviot Hills and the Scottish border. About a quarter of it is national park. You can spend the morning on a beach where dogs run free all year and the afternoon in a Roman fort built in AD 124.

A lodge suits that kind of holiday far better than a hotel room or a cottage in town. There's a kitchen for early starts before the Farne Islands boats, somewhere to dry boots and muddy paws, and at five of the six parks below, lodges with their own hot tub on the deck.

Then there's the dark.

Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water and Forest Park were given Gold Tier International Dark Sky Park status in December 2013, the top level there is, across nearly 580 square miles. According to the CPRE, the skies above Kielder are the darkest in England. On a clear night you don't even need to leave the hot tub to see them.

Coast, forest or Roman Wall: which area should you stay in?

Northumberland is big, so the area you pick shapes the whole stay, and most of our parks sit inland where it's quiet and the skies are darkest. The coast is still an easy drive from every one of them.

Kielder Water and Forest Park

Come here for forest, water and stars. Kielder Water is the largest man-made lake in northern Europe, and the Lakeside Way loops about 26 miles round it for walkers, cyclists and wheelchair users. Two of our parks are right in the middle of it. It's ideal for a long weekend of walking and cycling.

Hexham and Hadrian's Wall

Hexham is a proper Northumberland market town, with its Abbey at the centre and a market every Tuesday from 9am to 4pm. It's great for stocking the fridge and only a short drive from Housesteads. Our guide to lodges near Hexham covers the town in more detail.

Wooler and the Cheviots

Up in the north, Wooler is the place to stay for the Cheviot Hills, the north coast and a hop over the border.

The coast from Alnwick to Berwick

This is where you'll find Alnwick, Bamburgh, Seahouses and Holy Island. If you'd rather be near the sand, see our pages on lodges near Bamburgh and lodges near Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Northumberland lodges with hot tubs and pet friendly parks

All six of these popular Northumberland parks welcome pets, and five offer lodges with hot tubs. Drive times are from the middle of the county, so they show roughly how central each location is. You can also browse every lodge with a hot tub on the site.

Who's it best for? Families with kids. There's a clubhouse with a family room and adults-only bar, a play area, a small gym and a skate park.

What can you do here? Walk the long sands of Druridge Bay, which run north from Cresswell.

Hot tub breaks in Northumberland under Gold Tier dark skies

Visit in autumn or winter for the best stargazing, when the nights are longest. Switch off the deck lights, wrap up and give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust.

It makes a huge difference.

Kielder Observatory

On the hill above Kielder, astronomers point the telescopes at Saturn, Jupiter, star clusters and dying stars. Book ahead on the Kielder Observatory website, and popular nights sell out. Their own advice on the drive up? The lane is "interesting in dark but fine".

The planetarium at Twice Brewed

Cloudy night? Since 31 May 2026 Kielder Observatory and the Twice Brewed Inn on Hadrian's Wall have run a 30-seat planetarium, whatever the weather.

Alnwick Castle and Garden

Hogwarts students learnt to fly here in the first Harry Potter film, and broomstick training on that very lawn comes with your ticket. Buy online and it becomes a free annual pass for 12 months. Pet dogs aren't allowed, so make a day of it with the Alnwick Garden next door while the dog stays at the lodge. We've a separate guide to lodges near Alnwick Castle.

Bamburgh and its beach

Few views in England beat Bamburgh's castle on its crag above miles of pale sand. Dogs can explore the nine acres of grounds on a short lead, though not the State Rooms or the Clock Tower Café. On the beach there are no dog restrictions at any time of year.

The Farne Islands (puffins April to July)

Around 200,000 seabirds nest on the Farnes! Billy Shiel's boats leave Seahouses, and Inner Farne landing trips run from April to September, with a National Trust landing fee on top. Dogs can't land, but they're welcome on the cruises. Staple Island is closed in 2026. From late October to January, grey seal pups take over the rocks.

Holy Island of Lindisfarne

Twice a day the sea covers the only road to Holy Island. Check the council's safe crossing times and, as the council suggests, allow an extra 30 minutes for wind and weather. Park in the main island car park (card or pay by phone), then it's about a mile's walk to Lindisfarne Castle.

Hadrian's Wall from Steel Rigg

The best walk on the Wall runs from Steel Rigg to Housesteads Roman Fort, about 3 to 4 miles of crags and climbs past Sycamore Gap. The tree has gone, but the stump may yet regrow. At Housesteads you'll see barracks, granaries and the famous communal toilets. The Sill visitor centre is just down the road.

Cragside, Rothbury

This was the first house in the world lit by hydroelectric power. Dogs are allowed everywhere outdoors on a lead, and there's a dog seating area in the tea room.

Kielder Water by bike

Bring your bikes for a stretch of the Lakeside Way. Younger kids can just ride a short way out and back. Kielder Castle has been shut since 2020 for refurbishment, so check Forestry England's updates first.

Dog friendly log cabins in Northumberland and where to walk

Every park on this page welcomes pets, and you can search all our pet friendly lodges and cabins too, but these Northumberland rules are worth knowing before you go:

  • Bamburgh and Druridge Bay: no restrictions at any time, so these are your all-year beaches.
  • Summer beach bans: from 1 May to 30 September, dogs are banned from short stretches at Newbiggin, Blyth and Amble's Little Shore, with on-the-spot fines of up to £100.
  • Beadnell Bay: seasonal restrictions apply because of nesting birds.
  • Hadrian's Wall: keep dogs on a lead, as sheep graze all year and birds nest on the ground.
  • Alnwick Castle: assistance dogs only.

When is the best time to visit Northumberland?

Late spring is our favourite, when the puffins are back and the evenings stretch out. Autumn runs it close, with seal pups, empty beaches and long dark nights for the hot tub.

Cold and short days, but the darkest skies of the year. Bamburgh Castle opens weekends only, and seal pups are still on the Farnes.
The Northeast Dark Skies Festival ran in mid February in 2026. Cragside's house and Bamburgh's daily opening return mid month.
Quiet roads and lighter evenings. Alnwick Castle reopened on 27 March in 2026.
Inner Farne landings start and the puffins return. Busy over Easter.
Peak puffin time and long light evenings. The Northumberland County Show is at Bywell, and summer dog bans start on a few beaches.
Puffins, long days and fewer crowds before the school holidays.
Warm, with puffins until the end of the month, but the coast gets busy. Book early.
School holidays fill the coast and the castles. Kielder is quieter.
Schools are back, the coast calms down and the last Inner Farne landings run. Beach dog bans end on 30 September.
Autumn colour at Kielder, seal pups from late October and dark evenings. Alnwick Castle closes for winter.
Seal pups on the Farnes and long, clear nights for stargazing. Bamburgh's Christmas opening starts mid month.
Cold, dark and cosy. Bamburgh Castle is dressed for Christmas and the hot tub comes into its own.
