Hayling Island Holiday Park

Funland is an amusement park on Hayling Island, near Portsmouth. It is a funfair-styled park, with rides mostly sourced from independent funfair operators and other amusement parks. The rides include roller coasters, a ghost train, a log flume and a range of flat rides, plus attractions for younger children.

Tip: No pre-booking is required, but opening times vary through the year, so check the calendar on the Funland website before you go.

HMS Victory is the 104-gun wooden warship that served as Admiral Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. She now sits in dry dock at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, where you can step aboard and explore the decks where sailors ate, slept, worked and fought.

Tip: Tickets can be bought online through the Royal Navy Museums website, so it's worth sorting them before you set off.

Paultons Park is a family theme park on the edge of the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, set in 140 acres of parkland. It has rollercoasters, thrill rides, family rides, indoor and outdoor play areas and water splash parks, along with a collection of birds and animals.

Tip: Tickets are for a set date and some days sell out, so book your visit date in advance.

HMS Warrior is a Victorian warship at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Built in 1859-1861, she was the Royal Navy's first iron-hulled armoured warship and the most powerful afloat in her day. After years as an oil jetty, she was restored over eight years and has been based in Portsmouth since 1987 as a museum ship.

Tip: Head for the engine room as well as the upper deck, and look out for the Victorian crew's stories on board.

Butlins Bognor Regis is a seaside holiday resort on the West Sussex coast, at the east end of the promenade in Bognor Regis. Billy Butlin opened the camp in 1960, moving in the amusement park and zoo he had already run in the town.

Marwell Zoo is a 140-acre zoo at Colden Common, near Winchester, run by the conservation charity Marwell Wildlife. It is home to hundreds of animals, including giraffes, leopards, meerkats and penguins, with red pandas, snow leopards and a walkthrough lemur exhibit among the other residents.

Tip: Book tickets online for the correct day before you arrive, and allow about 4 hours on a first visit.

Fishbourne Roman Palace sits about 1½ miles west of Chichester. Built around AD 75, it is the largest known Roman residential palace north of the Alps, and its footprint was bigger than Buckingham Palace's. Much of it has been excavated and preserved, with an on-site museum alongside.

Tip: Head for the north wing first to see the Dolphin mosaic, and check the official website for current opening times, tours, café and dog rules before you go.

Fort Nelson is one of five forts built on Portsdown Hill in the 1860s, put up to guard the naval base at Portsmouth against a French land attack. It is a Grade I listed building, and the Royal Armouries uses it to house the artillery of the national collection of arms and armour.
