We had such a great weekend at Kirkton Lodge celebrating our daughter's birthday. The place itself is lovely-spacious, beautifully maintained and fully stocked with everything we needed. The staff really went above and beyond; when we had a small leak, they responded quickly and sorted it out in no time, which was really impressive. We've always loved this part of the country and staying here just made it better. Definitely recommend and were already planning our next visit!

We just got back from a fab 4-night stay at this lodge and honestly, it was brilliant. The place is stunning, super clean and well-equipped - everything we needed. The WiFi was solid, streaming Prime without a hitch. The hot tub was spotless and relaxing and the bed was so comfy, we didnt want to leave! The cosy vibe of the apartment was just right, not stuffy at all. We also loved the hotel bar and food, great menu and tasty meals every night. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Wed definitely go back!

We recently stayed at this lodge and while the setting itself is quite charming with stunning views and a real sense of getting away from it all, there are definitely a few things that left us a bit disappointed. First off, the check-in process was a bit of a headache. We arrived early in the morning, expecting to drop off our bags and maybe start exploring, but we were told we couldnt check in until after 4 pm. Honestly, six hours of waiting seemed a bit excessive, especially since the staff kept hassling us about checking in early. When we finally got the key, we headed up to the lodge only to find four cleaners sitting idly in a car, taking their sweet time to drive off - really felt like they werent in any rush.Once inside, I have to admit, I was quite impressed. The lodge itself is a good size, with a lovely two-person sauna and a hot tub thats perfect for relaxing. The views are stunning and the wildlife around is just fantastic - it really gives you that away from it all vibe that we were after. That said, the longer we stayed and the more we looked around, the more issues we noticed. The top of the wardrobe was coated in dust - I popped a cloth bag up there and pulled it down and it was completely covered. Not what youd expect from a place thats meant to be maintained, especially considering the price. The kitchen tap was loose and wobbled quite a bit, even though it still worked. The wall near the bathroom sink was peeling and looked like it hadnt been touched in ages. The hot tub, which was one of the main reasons we booked this place, only had one of the four seats working properly and two jets came loose while we were using it. They just clicked back in easily enough, but it felt like poor maintenance. Plus, Im pretty sure they dont change the water between guests - Ive seen lodges do that better elsewhere.Above the hot tub, theres a nice overhang from the lodge, which is handy, but it doesnt cover the whole deck and hot tub area. Someone also started staining it but left it half-done, so it looks pretty unfinished. When relaxing in the hot tub, its a bit of a distraction staring at this half-finished stain job. The decking itself has no gate, which was a pain since we had our dog with us. We had to improvise with a table and chairs to keep him from wandering off through the open patio door. The railing on the decking was partly replaced but wasnt stained to match, making it look like a patch-up job. Overall, the decking looks pretty neglected - the varnish is worn through in places and the whole area could do with some proper maintenance. All in all, it feels like these lodges were once quite pristine, but they havent been looked after properly over the years. The price definitely suggests they should be kept to a higher standard. The location itself is lovely, very remote, which is exactly what we wanted, but its definitely off-grid. The nearest shop is about half an hour away down a single-track lane, so be prepared for that. Theres a restaurant at the bottom of the hill, but we only ate there once. The steak was over £50 for two steaks and chips and honestly, it wasnt great - the steak was pretty average and the chips were greasy, so we left most of it.One of the biggest drawbacks is that theres no internet, no Wi-Fi and no phone signal whatsoever. If youre looking to disconnect completely, then this is perfect - but if you need to stay connected, you might want to think twice. Overall, we enjoyed our stay because of the location and the views, but the maintenance issues and lack of amenities did put a bit of a dampener on things. Its definitely a place that could be amazing with a bit more care and attention, especially considering the price point.
