Pontcysyllte Aqueduct carries the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee in the Vale of Llangollen. Whittington Castle stands in the village of Whittington in northern Shropshire, close to the Welsh border and the old fort of Old Oswestry. It began as a motte-and-bailey castle and was rebuilt in the 13th century, with buildings along a curtain wall, five towers on a raised platform, a moat and an outer gatehouse or barbican.
Tip: Look for the viewing mound in the centre of the site, which may be the oldest of its kind found in England.

The Gothic-styled Llangollen home of the Ladies of Llangollen, with carved timber outside and gardens to explore.
Plas Newydd in Llangollen was the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, two Irish ladies who eloped and set up house together in the late 18th century. It began as a five-roomed stone cottage and was enlarged with many Gothic features. It is now a museum.
Tip: Look closely at the outside of the house as well as the rooms, since the patchwork of reclaimed oak carvings is its most unusual feature.

Erddig is a late 17th-century country house near Wrexham, saved from dereliction in the 1970s. The Yorke family had an unusual relationship with their servants and commemorated them in portraits and poems, and the servants' quarters and estate workshops survive well. Outbuildings include the Joiners' Workshop, Smithy, Sawmill and Stables, and the house holds a fine collection of 17th-century furniture.
Tip: Postcodes aren't always recognised by sat navs, so follow the brown signs on the A525 or A483. Parking is free. Dogs are welcome in the garden and on the estate on a lead, but not in the Hall, Hayloft Restaurant, shop or Wolf's Den (assistance dogs are allowed everywhere). Peckforton Castle is a Grade I listed Victorian country house built in the style of a medieval castle, designed by Anthony Salvin. It has a gatehouse, a portcullis, a dry moat and large towers, and it stands in woodland in the Peckforton Hills. It now works as a hotel and events venue, and has appeared in films and television productions.

Chirk Castle (Castell y Waun) was built in 1295 by Roger Mortimer de Chirk as part of Edward I's chain of fortresses across north Wales, guarding the entrance to the Ceiriog Valley. It was partly demolished in the English Civil War and then rebuilt, and the Myddelton family bought it in 1593. It is a National Trust property and Grade I listed.

Shrewsbury Castle is a Grade I listed red sandstone castle standing on a hill in the neck of the River Severn's meander. Ordered by William I around 1067, it was extended as a base for operations into Wales. Parts of the original medieval structure remain, including the inner bailey.
Tip: Access to the castle grounds is free, so you can look around them even if you don't go into the museum.

We really enjoyed our stay! The cabins were spotless and roomy, with everything we could ask for. The hot tub was massive and the outdoor speakers and lighting created a great vibe. Nice touch with the champagne and basic supplies. The iPod dock and Xbox were a bonus, even if we didnt use them all. Definitely recommending this place!

We just got back from a really nice four-night stay at this cottage. The owners were super friendly but didnt bother us at all, just there if we needed anything. The large, fenced garden was perfect for our dog to run around freely. The place had everything we could think of, including a great BBQ. The hot tub was brilliant! Wed definitely come back and already told our friends about it. Thanks for a lovely break!

We really enjoyed our stay! The lodge was spotlessly clean and looked after well. No WiFi was actually a blessing for us, as it gave a proper chance to unwind without constant notifications. Shops are a bit of a trek, so no chance for takeaways without signal, but we managed fine. The bedrooms were comfy, bathrooms lovely and the kitchen had everything we needed. Overall, a great escape with only minor quirks!
We absolutely loved the lodge-such great facilities and the beds were incredibly comfy, we didnt want to leave! The only downsides were the wet rooms drain fitting being a bit high and slow to drain, plus the water pressure in the main bath was a bit weak. Still, overall, a fantastic stay!

We stayed in this lodge and honestly, its really quite lovely. Plenty of space for just the two of us and the open plan layout makes it feel even bigger. The bedroom has good storage and a nice dressing area. The bathrooms large, with a walk-in shower and the outside decking with chairs is perfect for relaxing. Overall, a great spot for a cosy getaway!

We stayed at this lodge recently and honestly, its a lovely spot. The decor is super modern and stylish and everything you might need is there. The living space is really spacious and comfy, perfect for relaxing after a day out. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated too, each with its own bathroom and the main one even has a dressing room - fancy! The location is peaceful, sitting beside a charming fishing lake with plenty of wildlife to watch, which made our mornings really nice. The lodges are spaced out well, so you dont feel crowded. The covered jacuzzi was a lifesaver with all this unpredictable rain lately - we used it every day! Plus, there are loads of restaurants nearby and the Ellesmere Mere is perfect for a gentle walk. Wed definitely come back!

We really enjoyed our stay and managed to do everything we wanted, especially walking the dog and relaxing away from busy work. The hot tub was perfect after a long day. Communication before our arrival was super helpful, which made things easier. The only thing was, the site wasnt very dog-friendly - our pup had to stay on a lead all the time, even in the garden. Itd be nice if they offered a little alternative for dogs to relax on.

We had such a lovely stay! The cottage was spotless and well-stocked, making everything easy. The dog walks right outside were perfect for our little ones and the farm animals, especially Penelope the pig, were a hit. The host was super friendly and quick to reply. Overall, we had a decent stay. The TV picture wasnt the best and the parasol was missing outside, plus the gate was broken, so ducks wandered onto our veranda. Still, not too bad!

The place was spotlessly clean, comfy and perfect for our dog Archie - he felt safe and secure. The location was great, with plenty of walks nearby and charming villages like Thaxted to explore. Honestly, we left feeling totally refreshed and relaxed, which was just what we needed!
We had a really lovely stay at The Queen's Lodge. The cabin was spotless and super comfy, perfect for unwinding. The outdoor area and hot tub were definitely highlights - so well kept and the roof over the tub was a lifesaver in the rain. Wed definitely come back for another break!

We stayed in the Sandringham Lodge 2 adults 2 children, lodge was beautiful can not fault lovely additional welcome wine and chocolates, hot tub was amazing loved that it was also covered so it didn't matter when it was raining (which it did quite alot)
Surrounding lodges also looked lovely and the ducks were very cute.
Area is lovely however not much to do when the weather is not the best buy wouldn't put me off returning.
Nice pubs, a couple of supermarkets, and parks all within driving range also a few good public swimming baths within about 20 min drive

Property is stunning, beautiful little touches on arrival, home from home for the week. Tesco is local but so try and shop local within the local town. Staff were friendly and helpful and a positive addition to the location. Only feedback is the high ceilings had cobwebs (it’s in the woods so expected) and the check in and out times were not ideal but appreciate the time it takes to clean and maintain the cleaning standards.
Beautiful surroundings was lovely waking up to the view of the water and the ducks. Cabin was lovely inside clean and had everything we needed including a bottle of fizz, chocolates and jams left in the fridge would definitely stay again.
Gadlas Park is a hidden gem. Very quiet country location with just lodges on site, it is the perfect spot for relaxation. The lodge was beautiful with lovely finishings and was extremely clean. The welcome pack was a nice touch. Would recommend.
