Durham Cathedral is a Church of England cathedral and part of the Durham Castle and Cathedral World Heritage Site. A substantial part of the building was completed between 1093 and 1133, and it is a significant example of Romanesque architecture. The nave ceiling is the earliest surviving example of a pointed rib vault.
Tip: There is no parking at or near the cathedral, so use the Park and Ride or the Cathedral Bus into Durham. The tower is stairs only.

A 13th-century manor house and garden, and the ancestral home of George Washington's family.
Washington Old Hall is a stone manor house in the heart of Washington village, cared for by the National Trust. It includes parts of the medieval home of George Washington's direct ancestors, and the family took its surname from here. The ground floor shows a 17th-century home, with carved oak furniture and a collection of Delft ware.

Hylton Castle is a distinctive, highly decorative gatehouse-tower in Sunderland, built by the wealthy Sir William Hylton shortly before 1400. It originally held four floors of self-contained family accommodation, and its entrance front displays royal and family heraldry, including Richard II's white hart badge.

Lumley Castle is a Grade I listed, 14th-century quadrangular castle at Chester-le-Street, close to Durham. It stands on the banks of the Lumley Park Burn, a tributary of the River Wear. Sir Ralph Lumley converted his family manor house into a castle in 1389, and it remains a property of the Earl of Scarbrough.

Durham Castle is a Norman castle begun in 1072 on orders from William the Conqueror. It stands on a hill above the River Wear, opposite Durham Cathedral, and the two share World Heritage Site status. For centuries it was the seat of the prince-bishops of Durham, who held powers to raise an army, levy taxes and mint their own coins.

Raby Castle is a Grade I listed medieval castle near Staindrop in County Durham, built by the Nevilles between about 1367 and 1390. It has nine towers, a Neville Gateway with grooves still visible from its portcullises, and a large art collection including works by old masters and portraits. It remains a private family home, and the grounds include 200 acres of deer park.

We stayed in Penny Lodge for a couple of nights and honestly, it was fantastic. The privacy was spot on and the place looked stunning both inside and out. The views over the countryside were breathtaking and having our own private hot tub was definitely the highlight. Beds comfy, towels fluffy and the kitchen had everything we could possibly need. Loved it!

We had a lovely stay at Penny Lodge in Coastal Lodges. The place was spotless and quite charming, with a really unique play area that the kids loved. The lodge itself was beautifully decorated and you could tell the hosts put a lot of thought into the details. The covered hot tub was a real highlight-so private and perfect, rain or shine. Wed definitely come back!

Weve been to the Little Owl lodge three times now and it never disappoints. Every little detail is thought of and its perfect for coastal walks and exploring. We always feel at home here and will definitely return again soon. Love it!

Dugan coastal lodges was great and Sue is so welcoming! We booked a 3 night stay and we’re sent information from Sue about our stay. I was able to email about a couple of questions before arriving and got a quick response back. The location of the lodge is ideal for exploring during the day and peace and quiet when you want it! We enjoyed a drive to durham for some food and a day out at Seaham beach collecting sea glass. 100% would recommend a stay here!

Everything perfect
A first class lodge in a great location for both peace and quiet and nearness to surrounding areas to visit. Always spotlessly clean and has everything you need at hand. Also benefits from a large hot tub to unwind in after a long day sightseeing. Owners are very helpful and friendly and the lovely welcome gifts were very much appreciated after a long drive. Would thoroughly recommend it.

Penny lodge was an ideal place to go to get away from it all . Nice relaxing four days . The lodge itself was immaculate and well equipped. Comfortable beds and showers were roomy . Would re visit in the future.
