A very nice place to stay we have been there five times . there is a good view of the river which is tidal we have seen Heron's ,fish jumping , once we saw three seals. for the steam train enthusiast you will see the steam train from Whitby to Pickering . There are lots of Ducks that do the rounds of the cottages for breakfast & dinner nice to see .
Veronica, Sheffield
Date of stay: 22nd September 2018
The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped, and the bed was comfortable too. Plenty of heaters for if the weather turned cold,. One downside, there was little or no mobile phone signal in the cottage, and sometimes the wi- fi was hit and miss
William, Arnold, Nottingham
Date of stay: 21st September 2018
Sorry ignore the above as there was no restaurant.
Zoe
Date of stay: 18th September 2018

Date of stay: 11th August 2018
I would certainly take other grandchildren there. Lovely indoor pool, the little play-parks
on site were very good - an only child had the opportunity to meet other children and make
friends. The scenery was beautiful, excellent holiday destination.

There was not a restaurant on this site, and it was not missed.
Tara, Rutland.
Date of stay: 4th August 2018
Overall, a fantastic holiday. The cottage was lovely. We loved listening to the ducks on the river. My husband loved watching the steam trains run on the opposite side of the river, adjacent to our cottage.
Christine, Grimsby
Date of stay: 28th July 2018
very good holiday but not much rest and relaxation, fun lots to see and do within the area
Moira, Chorley
Date of stay: 28th July 2018
Excellent accommodation. One slight point, the decking furniture could maybe do to be spruced up! Otherwise all great.
Susan, Cumbria
Date of stay: 28th July 2018
Lovely cottage, recently refurbished, quiet location. Only downside was a narrow balcony with bar type chairs which werent particularly comfortable for relaxing. No room for a picnic table. However, more a design flaw with the cottage rather than anything the owners could really improve and certainly not enough to stop us rebooking
Susan, Leicester
Date of stay: 17th July 2018
Cottage 32 has an upside down layout so you can appreciate the lovey view. There is a reserved parking spot outside, and as you enter there are two bedrooms (a twin and double) with comfy beds, and a bathroom with large walk in shower. Be advised, no towels! These are a decent size and nicely decorated. Up the staircase is lounge/diner/kitchen. It's lovely but compact and bijou! Settee and two armchairs with a door opening onto a balcony with table and 3 chairs. Lovely views of Esk river and viaduct to right. You catch early morning and evening sun. There is dining table and four chairs and small but we'll stocked kitchen. Lovely touch of board games and dvds in cupboard, candles and diffuser and solar powered fairy lights in jars that we used as night lights.
Benjamin, Halifax

Date of stay: 30th June 2018
Lovely accommodation. Only tiny gripe was that the blinds in bedroom did not keep daylight out and we had to put a towel up as a makeshift curtain.

Other than that it was a nice place to stay.
Jackie, Peterborough
Date of stay: 30th June 2018
The cottage was very well stocked with kitchen equipment - in fact the cupboards could have done with a clear out. Patio area was very public and couldn't be used. The site was down a steep hill, but was well cared for. No recycling facilities on site.
Sally, Oxfordshire
Date of stay: 30th June 2018
LOVELY HOUSE. COMFORTABLE, STYLISH, AND WEE EQUIPPED
Karen, Stoke-on-trent
Date of stay: 30th June 2018
Brilliant accomodation. The reason I marked it down on 'comfort and equipment' was we could have done with a little freezer - but we managed! - and it won't stop us going again.
Keith, Leigh
Date of stay: 23rd June 2018
Blessed with great weather we enjoyed days out to places along the East Coast and ate many an ice cream sitting in picturesque spots taking in the scenery.

- no/ poor phone/4g connection. Captain cooks Wi-fi doesnt connect in flat

- Directions poor on website
Mark, Winchester
Date of stay: 9th June 2018
Although our cottage could nominally take 6, we felt that the single bathroom and slimline dishwasher would have been a real limitation for more than 4 people. Having said that it was very well presented and comfortable accommodation. Finally, as a cyclist (Part of the point of visiting the moors and in particular the cinder trail over the viaduct), it would have been very handy to have somewhere to securely keep our bikes.
Sandra, Hornchurch
Date of stay: 2nd June 2018

The cottage was really lovely - very thoughtfully and tastefully decorated, we had everything we could have needed and more - even a small pint of milk had been left for us in the fridge on arrival. There were books, board games, small lights, blackout blinds - fantastically equipped home to a high standard.

Overall the cottage was great - there was a just a small issue of one of the wardrobes having a bit of rubbish left in. Sure this was an oversight as the rest of the cottage was spotless. Would definitely like to visit this cottage again. Great if you've got pets too.

Date of stay: 30th December 2016
The cottage was very clean and very comfortable and the layout with the bedrooms downstairs was good as this afforded excellent views over the river and old viaduct, the overall view was very positive and the only negative were the controls on the oven as the position markings for both thermostat and heat settings were missing (scrubbed out), and we could not find an instruction book, this made cooking a roast dinner very difficult as it took quite a long time trying various positions before we were able to get full heat. This is possibly illegal and I highly recommend that the owners put clear instructions near to the oven.

Date of stay: 17th December 2016
The cottage needed a wipe around and hoover when we arrived as there was grit everywhere, but after the cottage was tidied up it was very cosy and comfortable and we loved every bit of our stay here. We couldn't get wi-if in our cottage so don't bank on being able to use the internet even though it is advertised.

The only negative was if you're tall it is a squeeze in the shower, and the kitchen was very well equipped but no room to put any food in the cupboards as full of kitchen equipment, but these are very minor gripes and would definitely stay again.

Only crtiscm is that the accomodation could do with modernising and a new double bed needed as this one has clearly seen better days. Found quite a few spiders webs and carpet needs a good deep clean.

Cottage is very well positioned on site. Lovely views overlooking valley and up to viaduct. Comfortable but would benefit from a little TLC as there are some areas outside that are showing signs of age.
Well equipped and nicely laid out Would return without a doubt.

We stayed in no 15 Poacher's Cottage by the river:
Lovely well-equipped and clean cottage - a real little home from home.
Ignore any complaints about headroom in shower - still usable for my husband at 6'2".

Great place. The staff were fab!

Date of stay: 23rd July 2016
Although overall great value for money as the complex was all we needed, the cottage was very basic and well worn by far in the poorest condition of the cottages we have stayed in before. The fridge was broken and in need of defrosting. All the little details like providing washing up liquid, kitchen towel was missing. Equipment and utensils were again old and worn. The worst aspect was the all pervading smell of dog throughout the cottage. We made the decision to go out and buy air freshener but the smell refused to go away and was over powering at times. Dog hairs were all over the carpet and there were many cob webs visible. The bed linen was also well worn although the bed was comfortable. We would happily return to Captain Cooks Haven but not number 35.
Brian, Cumbria
Date of stay: 23rd July 2016
Returned to this cottage for a second year with family - spacious and very comfortable. Having en-suite facility plus family bathroom and two further toilets makes it great for extended family occupation. Lovely views over valley/river/scenic steam railway from this cottage and onsite indoor pool perfect for a relaxing holiday.
Gaynor, Cottingham
Date of stay: 19th July 2016
Just a home from home really. All the utensils in the kitchen that you need. Brand new full oven - spotless. Plus a microwave if required. Mugs instead of cups! there was a cafe tier which I really appreciated. I noticed that Tesco and I think Morrison's delivered food onto the site so obviously people internet shopped - excellent idea! (no shop on the site).

There were 2 bookcases with chick flick type books to browse, board games for children - not that we had any with us but we are already thinking ahead for grandchildren etc. Radio and cd player which is great as we like the radio on in the morning. Take your own towels and tea towels etc; but bedding is provided.
There is free wifi and I never lost it as some people found.

Being on the lower level there is a heck of a hill to climb to get off the camp if you are walking into Whitby but if you're fit it's fine - and actually got easier as the days' went by! But, the bonus to river level is the view! and then the view from the viaduct is brilliant!

We had our Labrador with us and we were able to secure him on a good length of lead to the table outside the cottage so he was safe and there were plenty of other dogs on the site that all the owners had on leads. Not noisy at all.

The only negative I will say and it's minor probably is that when I hovered up - the smell from the hoover was disgusting - I think the filters or something had been washed possibly and put back in before they were dry and oh my - I was glad it was as we were leaving!

Other than that I'd say give it a go - I know we will probably be back.

Initial review was good but a couple of things let No.13 down. It needs new sofas (ouch), mattress on double bed firming up/changing and better cleaning staff as there were a variety of cobwebs and dirty crockery. Location superb, house good but could do better.

The cottage was wonderful and considering the owners hadn't had the cottage long they had thought of everything. The only bad thing I have to say is they should remove the box set of Dexter. We came away for a relaxing week and went home completely addicted to Dexter. The cottage was fab

This was different to the cottages we have had before at Captain Cook's Haven, they were down the bottom by the river, but as they all appear similar it was excellent.
Michael, Wakefield
Date of stay: 11th June 2016
We have stayed at Captain Cook's Haven previously and would happily return again. Great location - both the setting above the river and the convenience of an easy walk into the centre of Whitby using the viaduct. Both outdoor play areas and the indoor swimming pool were both used.

We stayed in Cooke's Cottage (no.27) this time as a party of 6, including 2 under-5's and 2 grandparents and there was space for us all to eat together and then spread out. Accommodation was very good, with great views, microwave, dishwasher, toaster, plenty of utensils, 2 showers and 4 (four) toilets. Bedding provided, but bring your own towels, tea towels, soap, dishwasher tablets and toilet rolls! Our only complaint would be the state of the downstairs wooden floor which was sticky and dirty on arrival (our toddler's bare feet were black in no time) - so we bought our own mop and cleaned it ourselves and that sorted it.
Nicola, Leigh
Date of stay: 11th June 2016
The cottage we stayed in was comfortable and had everything we needed. The only slight problem was the patio area at the back was not very private. I would have liked a small fenced off patio area so I could have safely let out my dog.
Rebecca, North Wales
Date of stay: 4th June 2016
Well equipped, spacious cottage. Kept us lovely and warm. Only complaint would be dirty glasses in the cupboard - had to wash them all of greasy fingerprints snd lipstick before use but otherwise clean and comfortable.

Date of stay: 30th April 2016
This was the first time we went for 4 nights with a 3 year and 6month old, we all absolutely loved it. The cottage was nice and clean and in the perfect spot. We stayed at the bottom and could see the steam trains passing by. The pool was lovely and quiet, both times we went in we were the only ones in there. It's a lovely walk over the viaduct on the way to Whitby front. Very good value for money I would definitely go again!
Malcolm, Doncaster
Date of stay: 30th April 2016
We have using this park for over 10 years, every thing for a relaxing holiday. The site is ideally located, either top or lower levels. I myself prefer the lower level for scenic views by the river and the steam trains passing the park. The cottages are good value for money, the only thing for me is the shower, being small. They have good televisions with freeview so plenty of channels to keep the family entertained. They have WI-FI now, that's great for modern times. Staff are very friendly and helpful, making this one of the reasons we keep coming back.
Vivienne, Co Durham

Helen, Leeds
Date of stay: 26th March 2016
Loved it. Kids enjoyed playing out on the balcony even though it was still early in the year and weather cool though good for March. Tiled floors were ideal - easy to sweep clean.
Two double bedrooms with one twin worked better for us than the usual two twins and one double.
Minor recommendations to improve - reading light in master bedroom [attic] very poor.
A 4 piece toaster would be more useful in family accommodation rather than 2 piece.
Overall - very good.

Enjoyed our stay very much, just one or two negatives, televsion to small, lacking in some kitchen equipment, I.e no oven dishes, baking tray etc, we managed ok, but if you were cooking for six it would be a struggle.
John, Mansfield
Date of stay: 5th March 2016
The cottage was brilliant, they couldnt have got more equipment in there we wanted for nothing. Great location 20 minute walk to Whitby but a big hill to climb if staying by the river but got easier each day absolutely love it would highly recommend

Nice , warm cozy house with more facilities than you need but the only down side is if its a little windy the extractor in the bathroom makes a right racket so had to plug it with some paper and the top bedroom had blackout blinds on all windows bar one so it was very bright in the mornings.
General feel for the house was lovely though would definitely recommend

we have used this cottage for 19 years except for a couple of times when it wasn't available, it is just like home from home to us.
Karen, Newcastle Upon Tyne
Date of stay: 3rd November 2015
Loved the cottage, there were 4 of us, 2 couples and we had plenty of privacy as one couple used twin bedroom downstairs, which also had a toilet next to it and we used double bedroom upstairs. There was also a twin bedroom as well as the main bathroom upstairs so could comfortably sleep 6.

The cottage had a bright living room with patio doors leading onto a paved area with benches, overlooking the play area. Ideally located at the top of the complex behind reception and pool. The kitchen was well equipped and had a full cooker, microwave and fridge. The dining area had a table to comfortably seat 6 and had a unit with books and DVD's available for guests.

Very clean, comfortable and well maintained so much so we have already booked for next year and requested the same cottage.

A fabulous little cottage ideally placed. Felt very homely and we didn't want to leave. Bring your bikes and ride the mile and a half in Whitby, or Scarborough if you want a longer ride along the old viaduct cycle path. We really enjoyed our holiday and will visit again.

We now always try to book a Cook's Cottage, as it is the only cottage type where you're guaranteed to have a view over the River Esk.
Accommodation is clean, & very comfortable.
One thing that both Cook's Cottages seem to have in common, is that the living/dining room/kitchen floors seem to feel sticky? One has a wooden floor, the other stone tiles.
Jane, Coatbridge
Date of stay: 24th October 2015
We have always booked an Endeavour cottage and have always found them to be comfortable and well equipped with all the essentials for a lovely holiday. That there is a parking space for each cottage helps as you can be sure that you're vehicle is not too far away from where you are staying.

Having read some poor reviews for this property before our holiday we were rather concerned about what it would be like. However we were pleasantly surprised. David, Clydebank, Scotland.
Date of stay: 3rd October 2015
Cooke's cottage is well situated at the top of the site with its own parking. A very comfortable cottage with all the necessary facilities. An added bonus was sharing wifi with site office which is not generally available on the site. The cottage was a little tired but spotlessly clean. Cutlery, crockery, pots and pans clean and in good condition. Although there was only two of us, overall, felt it was good value for money. Would go back again.
Bettney, Derbyshire
Date of stay: 3rd October 2015
As soon as we entered the cottage it smelt clean and felt warm. The only thing we found wrong was the roasting tins and baking trays were non existent - but really not a big issue.

No 26 was first class, lovely view overlooking the viaduct and down to the river - seeing the steam trains pass by was fun for the children (grown-ups too!).
Out accommodation was first class - hope though that the window in the double room has been attended to as it couldn't be closed properly (reported this to reception). We have booked No 26 again for next year so will find out!

The cottage is a bit on the small side if there were 6 adults the kitchen is too small to cook in and the fridge is small even for 4 people, with an icebox only suitable for ice cubes and full of ice when we visited!
Not much cupboard space for food either.
The bedrooms were lovely and reasonable sizes, storage was ok.

Upside down houses are very noisy at night! We could hear next door's kids running up and down the stairs and even just one person upstairs was creaky enough to disturb people sleeping downstairs.

Absolutely fabulous holiday cottage! Well equipped and comfortable. Glorious location - but situated at the bottom of a VERY steep hill which would make it difficult for those with mobility problems. It was perfect for us though - and the views of the steam train were a big bonus!!

Lovely cottage by the river, children loved the steam train going past and the morning visit from the ducks

Cottage was well laid out with open plan ground floor and large bedroom at top of house. Other two bedrooms weren't huge but were manageable. Views were fabulous look down to river and steam trains, also great view of viaduct. Nice deck for use in dry weather.

The accommodation was clean and tidy and perfect for a family of 4 with teenage children. It was difficult to pick up the site Wifi however our mobile phones were able to do the job. I had read on a review site about how the upside down style of house could be problematic with noise, but we didn't find this a problem at all. The kitchen was small but fully equipped. It would have been helpful to have had a 'peoples brochure' in the accommodation to explain where other holiday makers had been and how good it was, especially in terms of food and outings. There is a quick walk in to Whitby across the local footpaths. It took about 15-20mins into Whitby. If you are going to drive into the town you would need to get a space early as it is very busy. Having said that we had a fab time and would go again.

There was a nasty smell from behind the fridge in the kitchen area, which we reported on arrival. The receptionist asked if we would like to change accommodation. We declined since we had already unpacked our luggage and the smell had slightly disappeared with the windows open. Everything remained OK until the last evening when the smell became very strong. We reported this the next day on checkout.

9 / 10 on facilities because men's changing rooms drain in swimming pool seemed to smell. Perhaps needs a deeper clean. Did not distract from holiday or pleasant experience of site.

Stuart

Helen
Lovely place to base yourself as feels rural but town is a mile away if you need it. Will see stay again. Cottage was clean and furnished well.
Joanne
We had a great 4 days here at Whitby. Would recommend for anyone. Not sure what all the bad reviews are for on the main sites and trip adviser?! There were 3 families stayed for a 4 night break in our parties. All accommodation was adequate, some a little smarter than the others, but all clean and perfectly suitable for our families of 4. We're looking at booking again this year!
Deborah
We have been visiting Captain Cooks Haven for 22 years - still fantastic - still love it.
Janice
It is the second time I've taken my grandchildren. We love Whitby and find it a convenient place to stay. They love the swimming pool . Could do with a better play area for older kids.
Keith
Absolutely fantastic !!!

Fun Days Out near Captain Cooks Haven

about 9 Miles
Located in Harwood Dale Village, North Yorkshire we think this attraction makes a superb family day out and couples will also enjoy the nature walks in the area.  There are 6 nature walks in total surrounding the farm so walkers and lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Some of our favourite walks include the Spring Flowers, Pond and Village walk which takes around 35 minutes, and the Meadow and Trees walk which takes one hour.

If you are enjoying a lodge break in the Yorkshire Moors and Coast then a day trip to the Scarborough Sea Life and Marine Sanctuary highly recommended. This centre is one of the regions most popular attractions and is educational as well as fun. Visitors will enjoy a journey beneath the waves, meeting many strange, beautiful and fascinating creatures of the deep. As well as mighty sharks and beautiful rays guests can get up close to some more common creatures including star fish and can also meet the otters, seals and penguins at feeding time. The site also has children's play area and picnic tables as well as a restaurant and souvenir shop. Family tickets cost £46.80 but the Tourist Information Centres in Scarborough, Whitby or Filey often offer fantastic discounts.

Located in the Scalby Mills area of Scarborough this makes a fun family day out for those who are interested in marine life. The fantastic ocean tank is well worth seeing - it's been transformed into a Turtle Reef and you can see an amazing array of colourful reef fish and coral. You may also catch a glimpse of the tropical sharks and turtles. Offering good value for money this is a day out with a difference and an all weather attraction.

This attraction is ideal for sunny days as the beautiful park is ideal for wandering out and taking in the scenery.  You can hire boats including rowing boats and canoes to enjoy the views from the water.  The pedalos with the dragon heads are always a popular choice too. Look out for special events including the Battle of Peasholm Park Naval Battle which has been described as a "must see".  You can also take a ride on the North Bay Railway which will delight children.

Betton Farm Visitor Centre is the ideal attraction close to the North Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough. This animal farm has all the cute farm animals you would expect to see and will appeal to younger children especially.  A great place to both play and learn we think the Betton Farm Visitor centre is great value for money.  Check out their website for the latest opening times and admission costs.  Some of the highlights of the day might include meeting Sofie the Shetland Pony and Henry the goat, as well as the pot bellied pigs called Porky and Hammy.

Situated in Malton in North Yorkshire this has to be one of our favourite family days out.  It's a theme park and zoo all in one stretching over a massive 400 acres. With thrilling rides for the very daring like Cliff Hanger, Corkscrew and Kumali, there are also more gentle rides for the little ones such as Frog Hopper and Helitoys.  Family fun attractions include the 4D cinema, the lost river ride and the Little Monsters Den of Mischief. Check out their website for seasonal events which take place throughout the year and you can also gain more information about the zoo.  Flamingo Land is a resort as well as a theme park so you can also book accommodation there.

As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.

Come rain or shine children need to be entertained and Creepy Crawlies just north of York is the perfect place! This all weather attraction caters for toddlers and children up to 12 years old with a huge array of climbing equipment, ball pools, slides, chutes and adventure areas. Adults can relax and enjoy a coffee and a snack while the kids are having fun.  The site also has a large and rather impressive outdoor area with pet zone and pedal track with Go karts. There is also a pond with fish and a sensory zone where children can touch and feel new and interesting things.
