Cheddar Gorge is a dramatic limestone gorge in the Mendip Hills, with cliffs up to 137 metres deep. A day ticket covers Gough's Cave, Jacob's Ladder and the Museum of Prehistory. Gough's Cave is where Cheddar Man, Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, was found, and its stalactites and stalagmites were shaped by an underground river.
Tip: Arrive before 11am, especially in school holidays and on bank holidays, to find a parking space easily. Booking day tickets online in advance also saves money.

Glastonbury Abbey is the ruined remains of a monastery in Somerset. The ruins are a grade I listed building and scheduled monument, open as a visitor attraction. By the 14th century it was one of the richest and most powerful monasteries in England.

The Roman Baths are well-preserved Roman thermae in the city of Bath. A temple was built on the site in the first decades of Roman Britain, and the bathing complex grew up around the natural hot spring over the following centuries.

A moated medieval palace beside Wells Cathedral, with a working drawbridge, ruined great hall and spring-fed grounds.
The Bishop's Palace in Wells stands next to the cathedral and has been the residence of the bishops of Bath and Wells since the early thirteenth century. Its walls, gatehouse and moat were added in the 14th century, and you cross the moat by a bridge to the gatehouse, which has a drawbridge and portcullis.
Tip: Look up in the chapel and great hall areas for the stone bosses carved with oak leaves and the Green Man.

Longleat is a Grade I listed stately home near Warminster in Wiltshire, and one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in Britain. It was the first stately home to open to the public. The house sits in 1,000 acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown.

Stourhead is a National Trust estate on the Wiltshire and Somerset border, with a Palladian mansion and one of the most famous landscape gardens in England. The garden was laid out in the 18th century around a large artificial lake, with classical temples, a grotto, the Palladian Bridge and the Gothic Cottage summerhouse beside the water. Rare and exotic trees add to the setting.

A fantastic place to stay. Great location, the lodge is lovely and there is plenty to see and do nearby.
Basics presented but enough to call home for a few nights. Everything is here for a break away.Our 3 children were comfortable with baby in travel cot.

We had an absolutely lovely week in mid-September and the weather was just perfect for sitting outside with a G & T. The lodge felt really cosy, like a proper traditional place and had everything we needed. The owners were super helpful - when we mentioned a chirping smoke alarm, it was fixed straight away. The location was great for exploring on foot and our springer had a blast running around once the chickens were out of sight. Definitely a place we'd recommend to others!

We stayed at Spindlewood Lodges recently and really enjoyed our time. The place was spotlessly clean and had all the essentials we needed. The only downsides were the front door and a heater in the living space, which could do with replacing. Still, we'd definitely come back, just maybe to a different lodge. Those chickens are a lovely touch!

WiFi and TV worked perfectly, which was a relief. The chickens dropping by each day was such a fun touch! A bit missing were some cushions and a hairdryer, but we had brought our own, so no biggie. We had such a lovely, relaxing break! Done all the usual parks, pools and pubs with the kids when they were little. Now its our turn to unwind again and were already booked for next year!
We stayed in a lovely timber cabin surrounded by open fields. The place was spotless and incredibly cosy. The power shower was fantastic-really helped us wash away the aches from a long journey. The only tiny downside is dogs need to be on a lead in the main field, but we totally get why. Honestly, one of the best spots we've ever visited for relaxing!

We had an enjoyable three days in March at Spindlewood Lodge. The weather was perfect for all the walking we wanted to do with the dog. It's a great spot if you love being outside and then relaxing in a cosy evening with good food and drinks.
We had a lovely weekend here for our special occasion. The lodges were spotless, super cosy and kept us warm. The setting is stunning, with great views. The local pubs just a short walk and its only a quick drive to the festival or the Tor if you fancy a bit of exploring. Sandra and Tony were really friendly and helpful throughout. Great stay!

We loved the peace and quiet, not to mention the regular visits from the chickens! The location is ideal for visiting many of Somerset's attractions. The owners are friendly and welcoming, and you can contact them by phone if you need anything. Would definitely recommend and hope to return.
