A Regency house, a famous carriage collection and wide estate walks near Barnstaple in north Devon.

A hilltop Somerset castle and country house with subtropical gardens, parkland and a watermill to explore.
Dunster Castle stands on a steep hill called the Tor above the village of Dunster, and has been fortified since the late Anglo-Saxon period. Today it is a Grade I listed country house run by the National Trust, with dramatic views and subtropical gardens around it.
Tip: The car park is small and its gates lock at 6pm, so arrive early. In poor weather you may be asked to use Dunster Steep village car park instead.

A family-owned former abbey with Jekyll-influenced gardens, a wild valley walk to the Atlantic cove and Malory Towers fame.
Hartland Abbey was founded in the 12th century and is still the home of the Stucley family. You can wander through the house at your own pace, taking in rooms from Medieval to Victorian times, with paintings, furniture and Chinese porcelain collected over generations. Exhibitions cover filming on the estate and the Stonehenge pioneer William Stukeley.
Tip: Hartland Quay is only a mile away, so it pairs well with a visit; the tea room needs a valid garden entry ticket.
Drive times are typical times by car with no traffic. Check opening times and book tickets on each attraction's own website before you go.

6 reviews from guests who stayed at Berrynarbor Lodge at Kentisbury Grange
Customer service at the restaurant was excellent. My only negative experience was a rather poor buffet section of the breakfast.
We had a lovely stay and made the most of the hot tub, which had lovely views and a perfect place to watch the sunset. The location was perfect for us and we had everything we needed for a weekend away.
Just returned from staying at one of the lodges (Lodge 10) at Kentisbury Grange. We had such an amazing time! The lodge itself was very spacious for the 3 (+baby) of us. The double beds were a great size and the layout just right. Bathroom and En-suite were lovely! The lodge itself overlooked a lake, which was lovely to come out to in the morning. The hot tub was brilliant and was ready to use straight away. Some of the lodge was a bit worn and it did get very hot during the day. However, this didn't affect our holiday and would happily stay in the lodges again.
We stayed at Churchill Lodge for a weekend and had a great time. The lodge itself was clean and very big and the hot tub was the perfect temp all weekend. We ate at the restaurant twice and would definitely recommend the bottomless brunch.
Areas of concern: toilet seat had been replaced and clearly didn't fit and was positioned incorrectly; the sofa and cushions were dirty and stained; the flooring in the kitchen and entrance was heavily worn and needs replacing; the decking had several poor temporary repairs and was wonky and uneven in heights; the hot tub cover was very worn with splits and cracks and the securing straps and buckles were broken or missing; the hot tub was not working on arrival and needing the maintenance team to sort.
What a lovely time we had at Kentisbury Grange. The lodge was amazing in beautiful surroundings. We had a few meals in the barn restaurant which were very nice. Staff were lovely. They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. I will definitely return.
