Sky Den our very own tree house featured on George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces TV show. With furniture that folds into the walls in the square, a wood burning stove in the cylinder and a roof that opens up to view the night skies, Sky Den offers a unique glamping experience for up to 4 people.Architect and TV presenter George Clarke launched this extraordinary treehouse project in December 2013 and it has been amazingly popular ever since. Created with designer William Hardie, SkyDen features a spectacular opening roof revealing views of Europe’s largest working forest and the UK’s darkest skies. Speaking about Sky Den George Clarke says, “We’ve never designed anything like it before. It’s part treehouse, part art installation and can offer a unique experience on a unique site.”Your Sky Den Experience. The Square. This is your main living area on ground level opening onto a balcony. It is accessible for our disabled guests. This compact space then transforms into a dining area or a 2 single bedroom layout when cleverly designed furniture is folded down from the walls. This space also houses the small well-equipped kitchen with mini-oven, grill, 2 hotplates, small fridge, kettle, toaster and mini fridge. The Circle. This is your outdoor seating and dining area situated above a free-flowing stream and houses a small wood-burning stove. The Circle is accessible via a gently sloped walkway from the roadside. The Triangle. This is your upper sleeping area accessed via external stairs. The triangle is not accessible by anyone who cannot climb the external stairs from the walkway. A small step ladder leads you to the sleeping platform. There is under-bed storage and of course, the roof opens to view the magnificent dark skies. The Bathroom. This is your level entry wet room incorporating a shower, toilet and hand basin and is located just outside the square.Sheets, blankets, duvets and towels are provided however we recommend bringing your own sleeping bags during the colder months or if you plan on sleeping outside in The Circle. Visitor Reviews of Calvert Kielder

Sharon, Wakefield
Date of stay: 10th August 2020
The Bradbury was beautiful and the furniture of good quality. However there was a lack of glasses and crockery in the kitchen. No soup/cereal bowls, no casseroles, no glass tumblers.
Shower in the main bathroom was broken (it would not turn on), we reported this on the first day. A new one was needed but wouldn't be fitted until the day we left. 4 adults had to use the en-suite to shower which was not really acceptable in a chalet of this price.
Hot tub has been placed so that when you lift up the cover the scenery was completely blocked.

Had a great time lodge was excellent very well equipped my only downside is the park it is in has very little for small children one tiny park not much in it..also at lodge there needs to be a gate to close off the decking from the road outside if you have a dog or young children its less than ideal

Will be returning in due course. As its self cater in the lodge make sure you get your essentials. I came from the south and the nearest for food etc at a good price is at Co-op in the village Bellingham. Its nine miles from the lodge. You could use a shop near Boat Inn but its very pricey. Plus Bellingham has a nice bakery next door to Co-op. Elf Kirk has a beautiful view :)

As stated above we loved the Straker lodge.
We didnt book any meals or activities so are unable to comment on them.

Date of stay: 16th February 2018
The lodge was wonderful, with every available home comfort (and more!)

The only slight criticism would be that it smelled quite strongly of damp when we arrived, but this went after an evening. It was also a little frustrating that the hot tub was not available for use until the following evening, as my children had been so excited about it.

This is an amazing lodge with lots of features and gadgets. The views are lovely during the day and even better at night with clear skies.
The lodge is extremely spacious and has everything you need and more.
Lodges were well spread out and very private, we didn't hear a thing .
The only reason we haven't given 10 is there was a smell of drains in the main bedroom and the bedroom lights flickered on and off randomly during the night.
The booking form does warn you the hot tub may not be ready for use on the first night and it wasn't. This is the first time we've experienced this.
We had a take away one night and the food was lovely, plenty of it and reasonable price.
The odd negative we have put were reported so hopefully they'll be put right.
There is an activity centre a few minutes drive away that has a pub which serves lovely food and a small shop that sells essentials.
We would definitely recommend this lodge and hopefully will return in the future.

A fantastic place to spend a weekend . Beautiful area ,lovely scenery . The lodge itself ( we stayed in the Bradbury) was amazing boasting a jacuzzi bath ,private hot tub and its own steam roam . The lodge was tastefully decorated to a high standard with every thing we needed even a telescope to do a bit of star gazing ,which we were able to do on the Sunday night . Will definitely return
