That’s the appeal of a break on the southern edge of the Peak District. Ashbourne is the little Derbyshire market town that gets you there, with a 212-foot church spire and a gingerbread recipe that’s been baked here for over 200 years.

Searching for lodges in Ashbourne mostly turns up single parks, one at a time. Close to town you’ve got one of the best-loved valleys in England, a traffic-free trail, a huge lake and a country estate with an Italian garden, which is plenty to explore on a long weekend.

Day out

How far from Ashbourne

Good to know

Dovedale stepping stones

About 5 miles north

Parking at DE6 2AY, free for National Trust members, with toilets and a kiosk

Tissington Trail

Starts in town

13 miles of old railway to Parsley Hay, with bike hire

Ilam Park

Next to Dovedale

Manifold tea room, Italian garden, dogs on leads welcome outside

Carsington Water

About 15 minutes’ drive

Seven-mile track round the water, bike hire and watersports

Hartington

On the B5054, north of Dovedale

Cheese shop and the Hartington Dales walk

Dovedale and the stepping stones

Follow the short tarmac path from the parking area and in about ten minutes you’re at the crossing itself, 16 limestone-topped stones that cross the River Dove under the steep cone of Thorpe Cloud. The National Trust has cared for the valley since 1934. Non-members pay £6 for up to four hours, according to the latest listings. The stones can flood after heavy rain, when you’ll need the footbridge instead.

The climb up Thorpe Cloud is worth it for the view up the dale. Just take it slowly, as Discover Ashbourne warns:

It is very slippery and it is much more difficult to get down than up.

The Tissington Trail

Here’s the easy day. The Tissington Trail follows an old railway line for more than 13 miles from Ashbourne to Parsley Hay, mostly on compacted gravel, and it’s flat enough for children’s bikes and pushchairs. Soon after leaving town you ride through a 353-metre tunnel. You can hire standard bikes and e-bikes on Mapleton Road or in the town centre, and Tissington village is about four miles in.

Ilam Park and the Manifold Valley

Across the fields from Dovedale, Ilam Park sits under steep hills beside the River Manifold, with an Italian garden, ravine woods and big views across to Bunster Hill. The Manifold tea room does cakes and seasonal lunches. Dogs on leads are welcome in all the outdoor spaces.

Carsington Water

A short drive north-east on the B5035, Carsington Water is England’s ninth largest reservoir. There’s a visitor centre with a cafe and restaurant, bike hire and watersports, though Discover Ashbourne suggests skipping warm summer weekends, when the paths get crowded.

Hartington and the upper Dove

Head up the B5054 to Hartington and call in at the cheese shop the Duke of Devonshire founded in the 1870s. Then walk it off on the Hartington Dales loop through Beresford and Wolfscote Dales.

What’s Ashbourne itself like?

Leave an afternoon for the town. St Oswald’s church dates from around 1220, and its 212-foot spire is the tallest thing in town. George Eliot was a fan:

The finest mere parish church in all England.

Then there’s the gingerbread. Legend says a French prisoner of war gave the recipe to a local baker during the Napoleonic Wars, and it’s been sold in the 15th century timber-framed building on St John Street for over 200 years!

Visit in February and you’ll catch Royal Shrovetide Football, when two huge teams battle over a ball through the streets on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, with goals three miles apart. Shops board up their windows for it.

How do you get to Ashbourne?

By car: about 50 minutes from the M1 at Nottingham or the M6 at Stoke, and a short run up the A515 from the A50

From Derby: about 11 miles along the A52

By train: the town lost its station in the 1960s, so use Derby, Uttoxeter, Matlock or Buxton

By bus: the Swift bus links Ashbourne with Derby station

Parking: long stay at Shawcroft (DE6 1GH)

You’ll want a car once you’re here, though, as all six parks are out in the countryside.

When is the best time for a lodge break near Ashbourne?

May is our pick. The bluebells are out at Sandybrook, the days are long, and the Tissington well dressings start on Ascension Day, which falls on 6 May in 2027. The village decorates its wells with pictures made from flower petals, and they stay up until 12 May.

Cold and quiet. Short strolls to the river and a hot tub under the stars.

Royal Shrovetide Football takes over the town on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday (9 and 10 February in 2027).

Lambs in the fields and quieter paths in the dales. Good value for short breaks.

Spring flowers and the Easter holidays. The trails get busier.

Bluebells, long days and the well dressings from Ascension Day. The best month to visit.

Long evenings for the hot tub and dry paths for the hills.

Warm and lively. Parking at Dovedale fills early on sunny weekends.

School holidays, so the dales and Carsington Water are at their busiest. Go early.

Quieter trails, mild weather and the best cycling of the year.

Autumn colour in the dales and woods.
