That’s the pull of a lodge break in this corner of Lancashire. Clitheroe sits in the middle of it all, a small market town with a Norman keep on a limestone crag.

We’ve picked six Ribble Valley lodges from our own listings, all within 15 miles of town, and they’re a real mix: luxury lodges with hot tubs on a Grade I listed estate, quiet farm views for two, a family park beside an animal farm and a big site with its own 17th-century inn.

Every one of them is dog friendly.

Which Ribble Valley lodges suit you best?

Start with who’s coming. Most of these Lancashire attractions are within half an hour of your lodge. Almost all of them involve a good walk, a good lunch or both.

Clitheroe Castle and Museum

Climb the steps to the little Norman keep on its limestone crag and the whole of the Ribble Valley opens up, with Pendle Hill on one side and the Bowland fells on the other. The grounds are free to wander, and the museum below tells the story of the valley’s geology, people and industry.

The Clitheroe Castle Museum opens daily from 11am to 4pm between April and October. Winter hours are shorter. Adults pay £5.10 and under 18s go free.

Pendle Hill from Barley

At 557 metres, Pendle Hill is the landmark you’ll see from almost every lodge window, and the climb from Barley village is the classic way up. The circular route is about 7km with roughly 370 metres of ascent. Allow three hours. On a clear day you can see across to the Yorkshire Dales, and it’s easy to see why the story of the Pendle witches, tried at Lancaster in 1612, still hangs over the hill.

The Forest of Bowland, Dunsop Bridge and Whitewell

The Forest of Bowland National Landscape covers the wild fells to the north, and the drive through the Trough of Bowland is one of the best in Lancashire. Stop at Dunsop Bridge, the village nearest the geographic centre of Great Britain according to the Ordnance Survey, for a riverside picnic.

A few miles on, the Inn at Whitewell sits on the banks of the River Hodder. It was the Good Pub Guide’s Pub of the Year for 2020, and it has its own seven-mile stretch of river for salmon, trout and grayling fishing, so bring the rods if fishing is part of the plan.

Gisburn Forest bike trails

Bring the bikes! There’s an easy blue route and a longer red cross-country trail, both starting from the Gisburn Forest Hub car park, where you’ll find a café and a skills loop. Braver riders can hunt out the downhill trails deeper in the trees. It’s the best cycling in the area by a distance.

Beacon Fell Country Park

An easy one for little legs and older dogs, with 75 hectares of woodland, grassland and moorland, a short climb to the summit and a café at the Bowland Visitor Centre. Parking costs £1 a day, by card or phone.

Whalley Abbey and the Tolkien Trail

Whalley Abbey was founded by Cistercian monks in 1296, and its ruins sit in 12 acres of gardens beside the River Calder. The grounds are open from 9am to 5pm, with a coffee shop for afterwards.

Across the valley, the Tolkien Trail is a circular walk of about five and a half miles from the Shireburn Arms in Hurst Green, passing Stonyhurst College, where Tolkien spent time while writing The Lord of the Rings.

Holmes Mill and the Bowland Food Hall

The old cotton mill in Clitheroe, built in 1823, is now the place to eat and drink in the valley. Its beer hall has a 107ft bar, one of the longest in Britain, pouring Bowland Brewery ales. Next door, the Bowland Food Hall is stocked by local farms and producers, so fill a cool bag for the lodge on your way back.

When’s the best time to stay in the Ribble Valley?

Late spring and September are hard to beat, with long days and quieter paths. Winter is all about short walks, log fires and the hot tub under a clear sky.

Cold and quiet. Short walks, pub lunches and frosty views of Pendle Hill. The castle museum is on reduced winter days.

Still wintry, with winter hours at the castle museum, so check before you go.

Lambs in the fields and the first dry days on the fells. Good value lodge breaks.

The castle museum opens daily again, and the wild boar park opens for the Easter holidays.

Long, settled days for Pendle Hill, the Tolkien Trail and the Trough of Bowland drive.

The longest evenings of the year for hot tub sunsets, before the school holidays start.

Warm and lively. Book early if you need a big lodge for the school holidays.

Clitheroe Food Festival fills the town centre in August. Busy, but great fun.

Quieter paths, mild weather and the bike trails at their best.

Autumn colour in Gisburn Forest and the Hodder valley. Half term is popular.

Damp and dark, but cosy. Ideal for a hot tub and a pub dinner.

Festive lodge breaks, crisp walks and clear nights for stargazing.

Getting to the Ribble Valley

Northern runs an hourly train from Manchester Victoria to Clitheroe, Sundays included, taking about an hour and 20 minutes. Driving, the A59 links the valley with Preston and the M6 to the west and with Skipton and the Yorkshire Dales to the east.

You’ll still want a car once you’re here, as the lodge parks are out in the countryside and the best of Bowland is down single-track lanes.

What to pack for a Ribble Valley lodge break

The weather turns quickly on the tops, so pack for rain even in summer, whether you’re in a log cabin or a big family lodge.

Walking boots for Pendle Hill and the Bowland fells

Waterproof jacket and overtrousers

OS Explorer OL41 map (Forest of Bowland and Ribblesdale)

Swimwear and a robe for the hot tub

Lead, towel and poo bags for the dog, as sheep graze almost everywhere

Bikes and helmets for Gisburn Forest

Binoculars for hen harriers and curlews

A head torch for dark sky nights

Wellies for the animal park and muddy field paths

A cool bag for the Bowland Food Hall

A picnic blanket for Dunsop Bridge

A bank card or phone for pay and display car parks

Ready to book?
