Bring binoculars, as the Blakemere trail is the place for rare Mediterranean gulls and wintering wildfowl. Allow up to a couple of hours. All-terrain mobility scooters can manage it.

2. Climb Old Pale for the views

The Old Pale trail is only 3km but steep in places, with a shortcut back halfway round if little legs flag. Your reward is a view across the plain to Liverpool’s skyline on a clear day. Up here is the natural amphitheatre where the summer concerts happen.

3. Cycle the forest roads

Hunger Hill is an easy 6.4km loop, while the Whitemoor trail follows white markers for 11km past meres, mosses and lakeside views. Check the Forestry England site before relying on bike hire, or bring your own.

4. Gruffalo hunting, Go Ape and parkrun

Grab a £4 Room on the Broom trail pack from the Visitor Welcome Point (9.30am to 4.30pm) for a mile of spells and stickers. Gruffalo sculptures hide along the footpaths, Eddi’s Hillfort is an accessible play area and Go Ape has high ropes for older children. Fancy a run? The free parkrun starts at 9am every Saturday.

Days out beyond the trees

The Sandstone Trail runs 34 miles from Frodsham to Whitchurch along the ridges, passing right through the forest.
