Walk the North Bay promenade in the morning, watch the boats come in by lunchtime, then climb up to the castle walls for a view right along the coast. By evening you’ll be glad of somewhere quiet to go back to, and that’s where a lodge comes in.

Most of the parks sit just outside Scarborough, in the beautiful farmland around Burniston, Cayton and Snainton, with the North York Moors behind them and the sea a few minutes away.

You get the seaside by day and a private hot tub by night. Below are six real parks within about half an hour of the seafront, a side by side table, the dog rules for the beaches, our favourite walks and days out, and a month by month guide to when to go.

Which lodges near Scarborough are worth booking?

All six of these parks are pet friendly and all six have hot tub lodges, so the real choice comes down to location. Want sea views and a five-minute drive into town? Go for the first two. For a pool and a restaurant on site, look at Killerby Old Hall, and for lakes or moorland quiet, head a little further inland. They’re listed closest first.

Short on time? Around Scarborough the tubs tend to sit on the decking or veranda, looking out over farmland, woodland, a golf course or a lake.

On a clear night, out in the fields away from the town lights, the stars put on a good show.

A couple of practical things. Check whether the one you like has a tub, rather than assuming the whole park does, because at bigger parks it can vary from one cabin to the next. And if you’re bringing children, look at the park’s own rules on hot tub use for under-16s before you go.

Dog friendly log cabins and lodges in Scarborough

Good news for dog owners: every park on this page takes pets, which makes these some of the easiest holiday lodges in Scarborough to book with a dog, and there are plenty more on our pet friendly lodge search. The beaches are where you need to plan.

North Yorkshire Council runs a seasonal dog ban from 1 May to 30 September on signposted zones of Scarborough’s two main beaches, as well as stretches at Filey, Whitby West Cliff and Sandsend. Here’s how it works in Scarborough:

South Bay: no dogs from the West Pier along the main sands, 1 May to 30 September

North Bay: no dogs on the busy central stretch by the chalets over the same dates

Outside the signed zones: dogs are fine all year

October to April: dogs can go on every beach in Scarborough

Cayton Bay is a great local favourite. It’s about ten minutes south of town, dogs can go on the sand all year round and there’s a steep path down from the clifftop parking, so it’s worth wearing proper shoes. Peasholm Park welcomes dogs too, and Dalby Forest is dog friendly across the whole site.

Things to do from your Scarborough lodge

Scarborough Castle and St Mary’s Church

Climb up to the castle on its headland and you’ll see both bays, the harbour and the coast stretching north towards Ravenscar. English Heritage looks after it, and the grounds include the remains of a Roman signal station, an Anglo-Saxon church and a huge wildflower meadow. Check the English Heritage opening times before you go, as hours change through the year.

Just below the castle walls, Anne Brontë is buried in the auxiliary graveyard of St Mary’s Church. She died in Scarborough in 1849, and her grave looks out to sea.

The Rotunda Museum for a rainy day

Head down to South Bay and the Rotunda Museum, which opened in 1829 as one of the world’s first purpose-built museums. It’s all about the coast’s geology, with Jurassic fossils and finds from Star Carr dating back 11,000 years. Scarborough Art Gallery is a short walk away in an Italianate villa on The Crescent.

Peasholm Park and North Bay

Peasholm Park is a Japanese-style garden with a pagoda, waterfalls and a lake you can paddle round in a dragon boat. In July and August the famous Naval Warfare show takes over the water on set afternoons, with model warships battling it out to explosions and smoke. Free bandstand concerts run on Sundays from June to September.

North Bay Railway, Sea Life and the open air theatre

Across the road you’ll find the North Bay Railway, Sea Life Scarborough and the Alpamare water park. The open air theatre at Northstead Manor Gardens hosts big summer concerts too, with the season running from late May to September.

Walks along the Cleveland Way and the Cinder Track

The Cleveland Way National Trail runs right through Scarborough on its 109-mile loop from Helmsley to Filey Brigg. Walk north from Ravenscar to Hayburn Wyke for open clifftops and a wooded descent to a waterfall on the beach, then come back along the Cinder Track, the old Scarborough to Whitby railway line that closed in 1965 and is now a 21-mile walking and cycling path.

It’s a cracking day out, so pack a flask.

Days out along the coast and on the moors

Much of the best of a stay in Scarborough is out of town, and with the car at your lodge the whole coast opens up. Here’s how far the best days out are from Scarborough itself.

Day out

Drive from Scarborough

Dogs?

Good to know

Cayton Bay

About 10 minutes

Yes, all year

Surf beach and fossil hunting, steep path down from the parking

Filey and Filey Brigg

About 20 minutes

Seasonal zone on the main beach

The Cleveland Way finishes on the Brigg

Robin Hood’s Bay

About 30 minutes

Yes

Park at the top of the village, the road down is very steep

Pickering and the steam railway

About 30 minutes

Yes, except on dining trains

Steam trains run to Goathland and on to Whitby when the line is open

Whitby

About 40 minutes

Seasonal zone on West Cliff

199 steps up to the abbey, fish and chips on the harbour

Dalby Forest

About 45 minutes to an hour

Yes

Forest trails, Go Ape, Gruffalo trail, Dark Sky Discovery Site

Dalby Forest

Dalby is the big one for families. It covers more than 8,500 acres of forest on the edge of the North York Moors, with walking and cycle trails, Go Ape, the Gruffalo orienteering course and a visitor centre with a café. Forestry England charges for parking by the hour, and dogs are welcome on the trails. On a clear night it’s a Dark Sky Discovery Site too, so stay late if the forecast’s good.

Steam trains across the North York Moors

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is worth planning around. Repairs to Bridge 42 near Grosmont have cut the line short more than once this year, so check the timetable before you set off. If Whitby takes your fancy for a whole break, our guide to lodges near Whitby covers the parks up there, and for food and Flamingo Land there are lodges near Malton too.

Fish and chips and a pint by the harbour

You can’t come to Scarborough without fish and chips. Mother Hubbard’s on Westborough is one of the best rated in town and welcomes dogs, while Wackers has a full gluten-free menu with a separate fryer. For a drink, the Golden Ball on Sandside is a Sam Smith’s pub with mock Tudor timbers, a fire in winter and views across the harbour to the lighthouse. The Leeds Arms is a good dog friendly pub too.

When is the best time to visit Scarborough?

Summer and early autumn

Summer brings long evenings, the shows at Peasholm and the open air concerts, but it’s also when the dog zones are in force and Scarborough is at its busiest. Many families come back in September instead. The sea is at its warmest, the beaches are quieter and the heather on the North York Moors is still out.

Winter and Scarborough Lights

Winter is quiet, and the last few months of the year are the best time for a cheaper holiday on the Yorkshire coast. This year Scarborough Lights runs from 12 November to 20 December 2026, lighting up the castle headland, the harbour and Peasholm Park, with most of it free (details on The Scarborough Fair website).

Cold and quiet, but every beach is open to dogs and lodge prices are at their lowest. Wrap up for blowy clifftop walks.

Still quiet. Half term brings families back, and the Peasholm Park café opens at weekends from late February.

Lighter evenings and fewer crowds. Peasholm’s boats usually start again around Easter.

Easter holidays wake the town up, with the boating lake open daily over the break. Good walking weather on the Cleveland Way.

The seasonal dog zones start on 1 May. Long, bright days and the open air theatre season begins late in the month.

Long evenings for the hot tub, Sunday bandstand concerts in Peasholm Park and big names at the open air theatre.

Peak summer with Naval Warfare on Peasholm lake on set afternoons. Book early and expect busy car parks.

The busiest month in town. Heather turns the North York Moors purple from late August.

Warm sea, quieter beaches and the heather still out early in the month. The dog zones end on 30 September.

All beaches open to dogs again, autumn colour in Dalby Forest and Peasholm’s boats back out daily over half term.

Scarborough Lights starts on 12 November, with illuminations on the castle headland, harbour and Peasholm Park.

Scarborough Lights runs until 20 December, and the steam railway runs its Santa Express trains.

What to pack for a lodge break in Scarborough

The coast here can swing from sunshine to sea fret in an hour, so pack for both.

Walking boots for the Cleveland Way clifftops

Shoes with grip for the steep path down to Cayton Bay

Waterproof jacket for sea fret and showers

Swimwear and a dressing gown for the hot tub

A warm hat for evenings on the decking

A bag for fossils from Cayton Bay

A dog lead, towel and waste bags

Change for the car parks and Peasholm’s boats

Binoculars for seabirds along the cliffs

A flask and snacks for the Cinder Track

A torch for dark skies away from town

Board games for wet afternoons in the lodge

Sharing a Scarborough lodge with friends or family

Scarborough Lodge Retreat sleeps up to eight, which makes a big lodge a smart way to bring two families or a group of friends together.
