It’s a small, Welsh-speaking town in North Wales, and its location makes it a brilliant base for a hot tub holiday. If you’re looking at Porthmadog lodges with hot tubs, the good news is that you can be soaking under the stars within a quarter of an hour of the high street.

Below are six real parks within about 45 minutes’ drive, from lakeside lodges outside Criccieth to woodland cabins by Beddgelert, with a table to compare them. Then comes the fun bit. Beaches you can drive onto, two steam railways and walks straight from the Cob.

Every park here takes pets.

Which Porthmadog lodges with hot tubs are closest to the harbour?

The nearest hot tubs are just outside town, towards Criccieth and Beddgelert, and the bigger parks sit at the foot of Snowdon, on Anglesey and in the Ogwen Valley. Most holiday parks on the Porthmadog coast, around Morfa Bychan, are static caravan parks, and Aberdunant Hall, between Tremadog and Beddgelert, mixes static caravans with lodges. So the private hot tub lodges and log cabins tend to sit a little inland, in woodland or by a lake. That’s a big part of the appeal.

Couples: Beddgelert Snowdonia Cabins or Anglesey Lakeside Lodges

Families: Brynteg, for the pool and the adventure park

Big groups: Trawsfynydd, which sleeps up to 20

Anglers: Bron Eifion or Ogwen Bank

Dog friendly lodges near Porthmadog

All six parks welcome pets, but check how many dogs your lodge takes when booking. Black Rock Sands has a dog ban at its northern end from 1 April to 30 September, while the rest of the beach is dog friendly all year. Look for the red signs that mark each zone.

Porthmadog cottages with a hot tub, or a lodge?

A holiday cottage in town puts you a stroll from the quay, but you’ll often share a garden or a street. A lodge gives you a spacious private deck, a fitted kitchen, a bedroom or three and woodland on the doorstep for the morning dog walk. For peace and quiet, the lodge usually wins.

Luxury self catering in Porthmadog comes in both shapes, so it’s worth deciding which matters more: the walk to the pub or the view from the tub.

Sharing a three bedroom lodge with friends can work out cheaper per person than two smaller cottages.

What to do on a family or couple’s hot tub break in Porthmadog

Porthmadog was built on slate. William Madocks finished the Cob, the sea wall that carries the road and railway across the estuary, in 1811. By 1873 over 116,000 tons of it were leaving the harbour in more than a thousand ships, and that’s the history you’ll spend your days exploring between soaks in a hot tub under the stars.

Sightseeing in Porthmadog

Start on the quay, where the Glaslyn meets the sea and little steam engines wait outside Harbour Station. The high street is lined with independent shops and cafes.

The Cob: the 1811 sea wall, with mountain views across Traeth Mawr

Tremadog: Madocks’ planned village next door, where T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) was born

Moel-y-Gest: the 863 foot hill behind town, about an hour and a half up and back

Borth-y-Gest: a pretty Victorian village a mile south, around a sandy bay

Top attractions you’ve got to see in Porthmadog

Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railways

Two narrow gauge lines meet at Harbour Station. The Ffestiniog climbs 13½ miles through the woods to Blaenau Ffestiniog, and the Welsh Highland runs 25 miles to Caernarfon through Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass. Kids travel for a flat £5 on standard services, and the main season runs from late March to the end of October. Check the official website for times and tickets.

Portmeirion Village

Sir Clough Williams-Ellis’s Italianate village sits on its own peninsula across the estuary, all pastel piazzas, gardens and woods. Buy tickets online in advance, and leave the dog at the lodge, as only assistance dogs are allowed. Our page on lodges near Portmeirion has more.

Black Rock Sands

A huge stretch of golden sand at Morfa Bychan that you can drive straight onto, at a top speed of 10 mph. Explore the rock pools and caves at the western end at low tide, and keep an eye on the incoming water if you leave the car.

Criccieth and Harlech castles

Llywelyn the Great built the first gatehouse at Criccieth, on a rocky headland between two beaches. Across the bay, Edward I’s World Heritage fortress at Harlech now has a “floating” footbridge into the gatehouse, and Cadw lists adult entry at £10.40.

Cadw says it was built “from ground to battlements in just seven years”.

Carry on south past Barmouth to reach Dolgellau, below Cadair Idris.

Porthmadog Maritime Museum

Housed in the last slate shed on the quay, the museum tells the story of the town’s schooners, and it’s open from Easter to autumn half term, 12 noon to 4pm, with adults paying just £2.

Beddgelert and the Watkin Path up Snowdon

The National Trust’s flat 1.6 km riverside walk to Gelert’s Grave suits all ages. A little further on, the Watkin Path leaves Nant Gwynant for the summit: 6.7 km with 1,021 metres of climbing from almost sea level, one of the toughest ways up.

Llechwedd Deep Mine

Up at Blaenau Ffestiniog, Zip World’s Deep Mine Tour takes you 500 feet underground, through ten chambers to an underground lake. It lasts about an hour and 15 minutes, perfect for a wet day. Bring a warm layer.

Walks, pubs and places to eat

The Wales Coast Path’s estuary walk to Black Rock is 7 miles of salt marsh, estuary views and coves, with parking and toilets at both ends. Borth-y-Gest, near the end, is the perfect place for a break. Afterwards, there’s food and drink close by.

The Australia: a pub since 1864, now the Purple Moose Brewery tap, and dog friendly

Spooner’s: the cafe and bar at Harbour Station, with steam trains outside the door

Borth-y-Gest: cafes and ice cream by the bay

Good to know…

Porthmadog has a mainline station on the Cambrian Coast line.

Most people here speak Welsh, and you’ll see it first on the signs.

For forest walks and waterfalls, Betws-y-Coed makes a good day trip.

Booking a hot tub lodge early for July and August is wise.

Always pack a waterproof.
