Clovelly Lakes is a family-run North Devon site at Higher Clovelly, just off the A39, with five spring-fed lakes stocked with carp, tench, bream, perch, roach and rudd. Each cabin has a fully equipped kitchen, they sleep from 2 to 8, and a few have their own tubs. Book direct.<\/p>\n<p>After the same mix of fish, water and bubbles? Bulworthy Forest has four lakes outside the door and Ivyleaf Combe has fishing in its own valley, both about half an hour away.<\/p>\n<h2>What to see in Clovelly village<\/h2>\n<p>The village is privately owned, and you pay once at the Visitor Centre at the top. For 2026 that&rsquo;s &pound;10.90 for adults and &pound;6.25 for children aged 7 to 16, with under 7s free and a family ticket at &pound;27. Your ticket covers parking, a 20-minute film, two museums and the walled gardens, and you can come back free within 7 days.<\/p>\n<p>Allow two to three hours, longer with lunch.<\/p>\n<h3>Workshops, donkeys and the chapel<\/h3>\n<p>Built like a traditional Devon long barn, the Visitor Centre has a caf&eacute; and shop. Just below it are the craft workshops, including a pottery where you can make and decorate your own pot, and the old stables where the Clovelly donkeys live; for centuries they hauled goods up the hill on sledges. Halfway down, pop into the tiny chapel of St Peter, built in 1846 and still in use, then rest at Mount Pleasant by the war memorial.<\/p>\n<h3>Fisherman&rsquo;s Cottage and the Kingsley Museum<\/h3>\n<p>Step inside a fisherman&rsquo;s family home of the 1930s, complete with a sail loft and straw mattresses in the attic. Next door you&rsquo;ll learn about Charles Kingsley, who grew up here and wrote Westward Ho!<\/p>\n<h3>Clovelly Harbour and the waterfall<\/h3>\n<p>At the foot of the steep cobbled street, the old quay shelters a handful of boats and the Red Lion, where you can sit with a pint and watch the tide. Wander the pebble beach to a small waterfall, with a cave behind it where legend says Merlin was born.<\/p>\n<p>Up at the top, Clovelly Court Gardens hide restored Victorian glasshouses and espaliered fruit trees behind high walls.<\/p>\n<h2>Walks from the village<\/h2>\n<p>The South West Coast Path runs right through, so you can step straight out onto the cliff tops. Head west through the woods and you&rsquo;ll drop down to Mouth Mill, a rocky cove where a stream meets the sea. Start from the National Trust car park at Brownsham for a circular route.<\/p>\n<p>East of the cottages, the Hobby Drive is a peaceful woodland track built between 1811 and 1829 to give local men work after the Napoleonic wars. It&rsquo;s gorgeous in autumn.<\/p>\n<h2>Days out near your cabin<\/h2>\n<h3>Hartland Abbey and Hartland Quay<\/h3>\n<p>Hartland Abbey opens from late March to early October, Sunday to Thursday, and its Bluebell Sundays in April are worth planning a spring break around. Just beyond, Hartland Quay sits at the end of the road among jagged rock.<\/p>\n<h3>Lundy on the MS Oldenburg<\/h3>\n<p>Sailings leave Bideford or Ilfracombe up to four times a week from late March to late October, taking under two hours. Heading south? The Arthurian headland at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookholidaylodge.co.uk\/help\/towns\/lodges-near-tintagel\/\">Tintagel<\/a> is about an hour away, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookholidaylodge.co.uk\/help\/towns\/lodges-near-dartmoor\/\">Dartmoor<\/a> makes a good inland day.<\/p>\n<h2>Good to know before you go<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opening hours:<\/strong> open all year apart from Christmas, 9am to 5pm in summer and 10am to 4pm in winter<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dogs:<\/strong> welcome on a lead, with bins along the way<\/li>\n<li><strong>Access:<\/strong> the High Street is a 20% slope and slippery when wet, so it&rsquo;s not suitable for wheelchairs or most pushchairs<\/li>\n<li><strong>Land Rover:<\/strong> runs from the harbour back to the top from Easter to October, for a small charge<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toilets:<\/strong> at the Visitor Centre and gardens, both with accessible loos<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food:<\/strong> caf&eacute;s, tea rooms and two inns, the New Inn halfway down and the Red Lion on the quay<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>When to book your break<\/h2>\n<p>Summer brings the longest opening hours and the Lobster and Crab Feast at the end of August. Quieter months are just as good, though. Come for the Herring Festival on Sunday 15 November 2026 or the RNLI Christmas lights. Clovelly lodges are easiest to book outside the school holidays, when you&rsquo;ll have the cobbles almost to yourself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bhl-tool bhl-months\" data-title=\"Best time to visit Clovelly\">\n<div data-month=\"Jan\" data-rating=\"2\">Quiet and peaceful, with the village open 10am to 4pm.
