Lodges in Dorset Guide

A county that offers the perfect, idyllic break away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Dorset is a beautiful destination with an abundance of things to do, all within a playground of beaches and serene countryside.

If you’re planning a holiday with all the family, there are dozens of attractions to keep the kids busy throughout your stay. For a more relaxed break with friends or as a couple, take time to soak in the wonderful scenery and do some exploring – you won’t run out of inspiration.

The great outdoors

Having been featured in a number of high profile film and TV productions including the multi-award winning Broadchurch and Far From the Madding Crowd, having inspired writers and poets for years, the landscape speaks volumes. There’s a bounty of historic castles and stately homes and gardens to explore at your own pace in the Dorset sunshine to allow for a more relaxing trip. The eighteenth century Lulworth Castle has an exciting history as a hunting lodge for the past king and court, offering some wonderful scenery. The combination of countryside and coast makes for a perfect escape, perfect for recharging batteries. With the South West Coast Path running along 73 miles of Dorset coast, it provides wonderful hikes with sheer beauty as a backdrop. Golfers can enjoy a number of excellent courses in the county with different challenges and scenery, and cyclists can enjoy hill climbs or a gentle cycle through quaint villages en route to one of the county’s many pubs.

Coast with the most

Of course, there are the beautiful beaches which should be on any visitors’ itineraries. The iconic Chesil Beach is the perfect day trip, and Dorset has many other beaches that are perfect for rockpooling, crabbing, picnicking, sunbathing and building sandcastles with the family. For keen fishers, Chesil Beach at sunset is perfect for mackerel fishing and angling at sea via a boat trip is also available.

Follow Dorset’s section of the south west coast path alongside the stunning Jurassic Coast for some incredible rock formations and views from the cliffs. For those who prefer horse as their mode of transport, some excellent trails and bridleways are on offer along the beaches and rural coastal regions for a gallop against the sea breeze. For those looking for a little more adventure, speeding down the coast in a RIB will get that adrenaline going, and coasteering is also a fun past time.

A family affair

Boasting some of the best family attractions in the country, it’s not difficult to see why. Kids will love a trip on Swanage Railway’s traditional steam trains, whilst parents can take in the picturesque views across Purbeck hills. Moors Valley Country Park features over a thousand acres of parkland and wood area that just screams adventure – why not try your hand at the tree top walk ways for a high wire adventure with the kids?

If they’d like to get up close and personal with some furry friends, Farmer Palmers Farm Park offers a truly rural experience with animal feeds, tractor rides, and play areas, and Monkey World has hundreds of rescued apes and monkeys that will give the kids memories to last a lifetime. For families seeking a little more adventure, there are opportunities to kite surf across the waves or abseil down the county’s cliffs. Other fun activities include clay pigeon shooting, quad biking, and army assault courses – you won’t be bored!

Retail therapy

From fashion to food to antiques, Dorset has it all! With a surprising choice of boutique and larger retail shops, it’s a great activity for keen shoppers on a day off from exploring the beautiful county coast. Head to Bournemouth, Poole, or Weymouth for some great fashion shopping in large department stores and independent retailers selling everything from cocktail dresses to designer handbags. The county has some excellent vintage shops including Bridport’s Art and Vintage Quarter for antiques and bric-a-brac, and there are many treasure troves of gems in towns including Wareham and Christchurch. Art lovers will enjoy shopping at the many galleries and studios in most Dorset towns, from watercolours to impressive glass creations. For foodies looking to invest in some of the best local produce, head to the Salt Pig Farm Shop – you’ll find delicious meat, vegetables, cheese, and bread; the perfect ingredients for your own creations.

Luxury Dorset lodge breaks

Whether you choose a coastal break in Dorset or a lodge holiday closer to the countryside, this county really does offer the perfect holiday. Beautiful Warmwell near Weymouth is set in woodland, and is perfect for families with children thanks to the indoor heated pool with wave machine and a 110-metre ski slope. Burnbake Forest Lodge is perfect for couples looking for a romantic retreat on the coast, with walks leading to beautiful Studland Beach and Poole Harbour. The lodge complex focuses on relaxation, with woodburning stoves, barbecues, and private hot tubs near to the stunning Jurassic coastline.

Holiday Lodges in Dorset are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditonal Dorset holiday parks. Lodges offer a more luxurious and romantic base for your holiday and tend to have more mod cons like dishwashers and flatscreen tvs. Newlands Park is a good example as they have lodges in addition to caravans and apartments. This 5 star holiday park has indoor and outdoor pools as well as a peaceful setting. Warmwell holiday lodges in Weymouth are also highly recommended. These spacious lodges have a scenic woodland setting and are perfect for all year round breaks.
