Lodges in Derbyshire Guide

Nestled in England’s East Midlands, the county of Derbyshire is known for being supremely diverse whilst offering some of the finest scenery in the country. Boasting the perfect blend of town, city, and country, it’s a thriving region for both business and pleasure.

The county’s namesake city of Derby has a unique combination of urban arts, tourism, and shopping, whilst the region also harbours some of the most impressive countryside for outdoor activities for all ages in the Peak District.

Reaching the Peak

Proudly claiming Britain’s first national park, the Peak District offers panoramic views across sweeping dales, craggy hills, caves, rivers, and woodland that’s there to be explored. Sprawled over five hundred square miles, the area is well known for its wealth of birds, amphibians, insects and other animal species in a well conserved region. Having traditionally been known to offer public parks and arboretums as a welcome retreat for industrial workers in the nineteenth century, there are plenty of outdoor spaces to ramble. Nowadays, there’s so much more to do – try your hand at abseiling, air sports, golfing, karting, and watersports, all within this stunning area.

Top attractions

Remnants of the county’s significance in the industrial era still remain, with the world’s first water powered cotton spinning mill still available to discover, marking the impressive birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Derbyshire has a plethora of pretty market towns that are certainly worth visiting, including Ashbourne, Chesterfield with its crooked spire, and the beautiful Georgian spa town of Buxton - proudly known as having the country’s highest marketplace, it’s also known for its mineral water. The neighbouring town of Bakewell offers its delicious namesake tart whilst in the beautiful surroundings of the Peak District.

Families may enjoy visiting the iconic Chatsworth House – best known as the setting for Pride and Prejudice, with its elegant stately rooms and stunning grounds. Kids will love spotting adorable creatures at the Chestnut Centre Otter and Owl Wildlife Park, or climbing Derby’s iconic cathedral tower for the best view across the city. A wonder along the Cromford Canal is always a good idea, as is checking out some of the county’s historic railways, museums, and theatres. Every autumn, the Matlock Bath illuminations put on quite the display with lights and decorations along the River Derwent every weekend, along with an epic firework display that families will love.

Time to refuel

Well known for its diverse and vibrant blend of cultures, as you can imagine, Derbyshire’s culinary offering is equally delicious and cosmopolitan with many countries represented across the menus of the county. Perfect after a long walk in the Peak District, feasting on the local produce of the area is certainly a must – enjoy browsing the farmer’s markets, local breweries, and restaurants. Specialties include local Hartington cheese atop Derbyshire oatcakes, classic Bakewell tart, and a local afternoon tea. The county also has a variety of excellent gastro pubs, and fine dining options for those inclined – the Michelin starred Fischers of Baslow is not one to be missed!

Foodies should time their visit with the Great Peak District Fair and Beer Festival in the autumn, which has over a hundred indoor and outdoor stalls selling high quality produce from all over the county, along with entertainment. The annual Buxton Beer Festival has a generous selection of real ales and ciders that beer lovers will thoroughly enjoy.

Holiday lodges in Derbyshire

For a relaxing lodge holiday in the Peak District, Landal Sandybrook is set in the former grounds of a nineteenth century manor house with a bluebell wood and private hot tubs that’s a perfect escape for couples. Landal Darwin Forest has similar luxury, having won multiple awards for its excellent facilities, which inclide tennis, minigolf, zorbing, and archery – making it perfect for active couples or families looking for an adventure holiday in the heart of the Peak District.

For visitors looking for a lodge holiday a little closer to Derby, Weston Wood Lodges is a peaceful park offering private hot tubs in each. Located close to attractions including Alton Towers and Conkers Family Centre, there are plenty of fun activities for families and friends alike to enjoy.

From hot tubs to delightful scenery lodges in Derbyshire have it all. Swainswood Park is recommended for families and those looking for a romantic break. These lodges are close to top attractions including Alton Towers, and there are plenty of facilities within the park itself including daily maid service and wi fi access. Rated 5 stars by Visit Britain you can be assured of a quality stay.
